Meet Ashley Swarts of Austin, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Swarts

Hi ashley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Las Vegas and studied studio arts in college. I made my way to Texas via Marfa when I was 26. I spent my life doing all different types of creative projects and started tattooing friends while living in Marfa. I certainly couldn’t have anticipated where that’s taken me now, and all of the beautiful experiences i’ve gotten to have with my clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are definitely all sorts of struggles that come with owning a small business and being a creative. Wearing that many hats can be exhausting. The biggest issue I deal with is how hard tattooing is on the body. It wears on our wrists, backs, hips, necks, it’s a full body workout. Last year I struggled with some auto-immune issues that made doing my job physically impossible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started a Tattoo shop called Slowpoke. We specialize in handpoked tattoos. We started 8 years ago in Marfa. We renovated an argosy trailer into a tiny tattoo parlor. Our shop is known for delicate tattoos and welcoming, spa like experience. We have 4 different artists, myself included, that have different styles to offer.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I couldn’t tattoo for nine months. I learned how to pivot, and took graphic design jobs to fill the gap. I also learned to appreciate what I do have and spent the time off sharing dinners with friends.
