Today we’d like to introduce you to Blessing Messa.
Hi Blessing, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thanks so much for having me, VoyageAustin! I have always been the “creative” friend in the group. Growing up, I organized birthday parties for my friends and made handmade holiday cards for family members – arts and crafts are my first love.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many were isolated from loved ones and celebrations looked very different, I felt inspired to use my creativity to meet a need I saw. I took a cardboard box, decorated the inside with colorful paper, and placed small balloons inside to accompany the gifts. It was my first “Boxed Blessing,” and I had made it for my sister-in-law who was expecting her first baby. The idea was to bring the “party” to people: I began creating personalized and festive boxes to commemorate life’s moments – birthdays, graduations, showers- when in-person gatherings weren’t possible.
As the pandemic subsided and in-person events returned, I was asked to decorate my first formal event: an intimate baby celebration in December 2022. It was my first time creating a balloon garland, and I vividly remember how challenging it was. But somewhere in the middle of the struggle, it became clear that event design sparked a deep joy and fulfillment within me. I decided to create my own “internship,” offering to design and decorate events for close friends and family. From weddings and graduations to birthdays and baby showers, each event helped me refine my skills and build confidence in my creative voice.
While I was honing my decor skills, I was working full-time as a public health practitioner. The original plan was to launch Blissful Events by Blessing (BEB) while continuing to nurture my career in public health. However, early last year, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job of four years. I stood at a crossroads: either I return to working for someone else, or take a leap of faith and bet on myself. After many conversations with my husband — and with God —, I knew it was time to go all in.
Blissful Events by Blessing, a design and planning company specializing in vibrant balloon installations and chic tablescapes, officially launched in March 2025. Today, I’m a full-time event designer, and I often think about how proud younger Blessing would be to see what we get to create every single day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth—but I suppose that’s part of the adventure of entrepreneurship. Any meaningful journey comes with its share of bumps, and that’s something I’ve tried to be very transparent about, both within my personal community and with the online community I’ve built.
Becoming a first-generation entrepreneur has been deeply humbling. I’m learning every single day. There are moments when I feel discouraged—whether it’s because my business isn’t growing as quickly as I envisioned, or I’m navigating periods of creative fatigue. My life took a very sudden and drastic turn, and in those moments, I’ve had to learn how important it is to give myself grace.
One of the biggest lessons has been understanding that my journey is uniquely my own. While I’m inspired by and learn from fellow creatives and entrepreneurs, comparison can be unfair—to them and to myself. Growth is not always linear, and success is different for all of us.
Despite the challenges, I feel incredibly blessed to be where I am. It’s a privilege to get to do something I genuinely love for a living, and even on the bumpy days, that gratitude keeps me grounded.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We curate joy. Blissful Events by Blessing is more than a planning and design company—it’s a form of ministry for me. We specialize in balloon artistry, elevated tablescapes, and floral design, and joy is one of our core values. Because of that, we are deeply intentional about caring for our clients and honoring their unique stories. That care is what fuels our passion and ensures that every event is executed beautifully and thoughtfully.
Some of the most meaningful moments in my work come from seeing the impact on the people we serve—whether it’s decorating a baby shower for a woman who has been trying to conceive for a decade, or watching mothers and daughters pose together in front of a floral Mother’s Day balloon backdrop. Those moments are powerful reminders that what we do goes far beyond aesthetics. We do this work for the people on the receiving end of it, and we hope our clients always feel that this is more than just a job for us.
What I’m most proud of is that I began. Starting is often the hardest step, and taking that leap of faith to build this company required courage. The growth and stewardship that followed are meaningful, but none of it would exist if I hadn’t chosen to begin. That decision changed everything.
What makes you happy?
Colors and community make me happy. Creating balloon installations with playful, intentional color palettes brings me a deep sense of joy. Colors have the power to evoke emotion, shift energy, and transform a space—and getting to create that feeling for others is incredibly fulfilling.
People also make me happy. Blissful Events by Blessing is about bringing people together in spaces that feel meaningful and memorable. I see myself as a curator of community, creating environments where connection can flourish. I’m especially grateful for the friends and family who surround me with constant encouragement and keep me grounded and rooted.
