Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Durgin.
Hi Cheryl, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career in education. When working in a private school with children with special needs, I was introduced to Applied Behavior Analysis. From there, I transitioned into the ABA field. I decided to open my own clinic and help children who needed ABA and educational services. I first opened in 2017 and have served children on the spectrum since then. I remained open during COVID and continue to serve the children and families that needed assistance. I run the business so it is a place where people are valued and children are given what they need.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle has been working with insurance companies and getting them to do their job and pay for the services provided. Currently, TriWest Tricare is not paying providers of ABA services, and it is putting companies out of business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Blessings Ranch of Central Texas?
We are in our fourth location and serving predominantly military children. We sometimes bring animals to the clinic to let them interact with the children. We make our decisions based on what the children need and not what will bring the most money into the clinic. We maintain the highest ethics in our craft. We are successful in getting non-verbal children verbal in a short period of time. We also bring animals into the clinic to let the children have some exposure to them and learn to take responsibility for caring for them.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My grandmother lived on a piece of property that was 26 acres of woods next to a river. I remember going over there and just exploring the woods and down by the river. My cousin and I would go to the river and turn over big flat rocks looking for crawdads and one day when we were doing it we picked up a rock and it moved…..it was a turtle.
