Today we’d like to introduce you to Corina Guillory.
Hi Corina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
CoffeeSock to us is our dream found. It is a simple, thoughtful, and resourceful brand, one that makes us proud to be a part of and share with the world. We created a sustainable product, one that is built around community and ritual. CoffeeSock was birthed late 2011 in a ‘necessity is the mother of invention’ moment. Out of Chemex coffee filters, and with an old traveling Chorreador, aka ‘coffee sock’ from Costa Rica as inspiration, we made an organic fabric filter for the Chemex. It performed so well that we were inspired to create models for all popular coffee brewing processes. As we began to offer these for sale, the reception was so enthusiastic that we turned all of our attention to developing a brand, a family business, and to changing the world ONE SOCK AT A TIME! – Robert & Corina Guillory.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being green wasn’t always easy to sell, especially a decade ago when reusability was on the cusp of becoming a movement. Rinsing and reusing your coffee filters was a hard concept to wrap your head around at first, but once you did it, it became second nature and easy to make that shift. During covid, we had a pretty big pick up in business, since everyone was at home brewing, not always able to get the paper filters they need, and it was also a time to reflect on the future of our planet and for the generations to come. While the staff was home staying safe, our little family, Robert and I, and our two children had all hands-on machines to keep everyone in the supply of filters around the globe. It was a scramble, but it was also a wonderful family group effort to weather together and hold down the ‘Sock fort. 🙂
As you know, we’re big fans of CoffeeSock. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
CoffeeSock reusable filters are an eco-friendly option for home coffee makers. Our filters are made with GOTS certified organic cotton, a renewable resource grown without pesticides and with minimal waste and processing. Our filters are compostable! CoffeeSock filters are 25% of the premium paper filter’s cost. CoffeeSock filters brew brighter than french press and richer than paper. Each pack lasts at least one year & replaces approximately 500 paper filters. Simply brew, rinse, hang to dry! We are proud to be a part of developing a brand, a family business, and to changing the world ONE SOCK AT A TIME! What, at first may appear to be a burden, magically transforms into a welcome ritual. The act of caring for the brew, filter, and subsequently our planet and community is steeped in simple, quiet, and grounded joy.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
2.25 billion cups of coffee consumed each day, assuming 1/3 are made at home, that would mean 750 million paper filters are being made and discarded each and every day. (that equates to 1.5 million trees annually) Bleached or unbleached, most paper utilizes toxic, noxious chemicals in pulp production, these chemicals can pollute water and sources of drinking water. CoffeeSock strives to be an undeniably superior choice in filters. We strive to perform better, with less waste, for less cost. Our hope is that we will change the world one sock at a time!
