Meet Curtis Igunbor of Mez Records

Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Igunbor.

Hi Curtis, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always love to tell people that my journey began the moment I was conceived. The reason why is because I believe all of the music that my father playing while I was being developed most likely had an effect on me. I was told that I would always dance around when I was little. My father played almost everything. Little did I know that hearing different genres trained my ears to be able to hone my musical abilities. I actually remember my first Hip-hop song. I had to be about age seven. It was Naughty By Nature-Hip Hop Hooray. At that moment, my life changed forever. Fast forward, I remember writing my first raps in middle school and having competitions. I started crafting songs Sophomore year of High School and started working in Pro Tools Senior year of High School. That’s when things got very interesting.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It absolutely has not. I tell people all of the time that when you venture off in a creative path, expect turbulence often. I’ve learned so much and to this day, I am constantly shedding skin and evolving to become the best me possible. Struggles from starting a business too soon to learning how to get paid the right way from clients. It takes time, but with enough experience you learn how to respect yourself and stand firm and demand what you are worth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mez Records is my recording business. I love to tell people that as an audio engineer, my job is to take broken fragments which are the artist’s lyrics and I stitch them together to create the perfect picture. Most times, it feels like as an engineer, you also are a therapist for artists. Some studio sessions all we do is just talk about life and the struggles that they are experiencing. Honestly, I think talking before recording is the perfect recipe. The reason is if you can somehow harness their raw energy before they record, you can end up with very powerful results. Ultimately, what I want others to know me for and what separates me from others is my ability to connect. I have a knack for having others express themselves in detail and feel comfortable in my space. If you would like to book studio time or have work that needs mixing and mastering, email mezrecordsinquiry@gmail.com

What matters most to you? Why?
Respecting yourself. If you don’t respect and value yourself, how can anybody else? Period.
