Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Prieto.
Hi Daisy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am definitely a small-town girl living her dream out in the big city.
Photography started for me around 2015. I had just gotten out of the military after serving for 12 years and was a stay-at-home mom with a newborn baby. I found myself taking numerous pictures of my son because I just wanted to freeze every second of his life. At this time, I was also going to school at the Art Institute of Austin for Interior Design. As I would walk the halls at my campus, I found myself studying each photograph on the walls that were taken from current students at the time. And just like that, I changed my program from Interior Design to Photography. I ran to the camera store when I got accepted. I have never put down my camera since. My son inspired me to be my own boss — to really capture people and those who they love. I wanted to capture all the special moments for others because being a new mom I quickly learned that life does not slow down. If you know anything about me then you know I LOVE family. Families grow and I love to capture those moments for others.
While working with families is my most done type of session, I genuinely love photographing all the things. Maternity, cakesmash, couples, events… you name it and I’m there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles… oh how there have been struggles.
Everybody’s road has some bumps along the way. I’ve just learned to appreciate them all.
My first big struggle while opening my business was finances. With a newborn baby starting a business in a city where I really didn’t know anyone (besides my army friends). I had no idea if I would be successful and be able to help support our family. Then you get into the deeper parts of owning a business (taxes, expenses, etc.). Hard work is essential.
My second struggle came in the form of self-doubt. I used to lie awake and wonder if I was wasting my time, if I was just throwing money away on something that would ultimately turn into a hobby…would anyone even like my work?
My most recent struggle would be balancing my business with being a good mom/wife. This has been especially hard the last couple of years because my husband is constantly traveling with work, but thankfully we have a wonderful friend network that is always there to support us.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in photographing families, high school seniors, maternity, and first birthday — you name it. I know some probably think photographers should have their “niche” in what they like best, but that’s just not me. I love documenting a little bit of everything. Watching families grow, plus being able to capture it all along the way is truly such a blessing to me.
It’s so important to me that all my clients have FUN.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I have the worst memory ever! I can never remember people’s names or faces so if I don’t remember your name or face please do not get mad at me.
