Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel & Jenna Watters
Daniel & Jenna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We moved to Austin in 2015 after cutting our teeth in Colorado and a failed attempt at relocating to Nashville. We both grew up in Sedona, AZ and started playing music together at our high school graduation in 2005. We released three EPs and one full length album as The Oak Creek Band between 2009-2014 and changed our band name to The Watters in 2015 and have released one EP and four full length albums since then. We are currently working on another EP right now.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth is definitely not the word we would use. Consistently bumpy perhaps. We love writing and recording songs and we love playing live shows, but it feels like every new release is harder to get people to hear it. I remember a time when Facebook and Instagram were incredibly helpful tools to spread the word on our music, now it feels like there are digital walls up everywhere and if we don’t let down our personal walls and let people in our our everyday, every moment in some voyeuristic fashion, than our art has no place or purpose. We have tried so many different ways to release our music from hiring high priced PR agents to Radio campaigns, and nothing seems to really help any more than just doing everything ourselves.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a 7-piece Americana Soul band based in Austin, TX. We specialize in timeless songs, exceptional vocals, and a universal, healing message for the people. We are most proud of our produced albums and just how incredible our band mates are. We feel so lucky to be able to play beside all of them and know it would not be possible to assemble a band as talented as we have anywhere else in the world. Austin is the most incredible music community and we are blessed to be a part of it.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
As with anything, the bigger risk the bigger the potential reward. You’ll never win the jackpot if you don’t play and the the more you play, the higher your odds are. We’ve never had enough money to be true gamblers, but we do enjoy the thrill of risk and we have had historically good luck with winning random contests and prizes just by entering. We have found that most people never enter contests because the assume they aren’t going to win. If you assume you’ll never win, you never will. We have learned by putting yourself in the running, your’e at least giving yourself a chance.
