Today we’d like to introduce you to Elena Velasco.
Hi Elena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My return to Texas happened in 2012. I had just finished up the Master’s program at San Diego State University and my belly was round and full with a baby that was on her way. I took on an instructor position at Fire Pit Ceramics, a paint your own pottery studio. The owners were incredibly generous and treated their employees well, but unfortunately, they had to shut their doors approximately six months after I got hired on. With a Masters in Fine Arts with a specialization in ceramics, there weren’t many opportunities for me to utilize my degree. I thanked my former bosses for the good deals on clay equipment and tools and decided to start a business. As you may have heard, rent is high in Austin. This, along with the fact that people like to learn and/or celebrate in the comfort of their own home, I decided to become a mobile instructor/celebration hostess. I have enjoyed all the birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, private lessons, and many other get-togethers throughout the years. I decided to add a Special Education certification to my belt as I found another joy in my life. I now work full time teaching career education and Social-Emotional Learning to people with visual impairments while instructing ceramics through my business about one-two times a month.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road that has led to the present moment has had various textures. It has been a challenge deciding whether or not to put my energy into my business full time. The other obstacle that comes up is the balancing act that needs to be maintained. Being a mom, a teacher, a daughter, a business owner, and currently a student, it all blends together and it can feel overwhelming as I scramble to make the most of 24 hours.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Special Education teacher, I thoroughly enjoy working with our student population as well as the curriculum we share. Besides the core curriculum, our students gain independent living, vocational, and self-care skills through the courses taught at our school and it is incredible to see them flourish and grow along side them. My ability to encourage them to develop self-awareness and reach for that confidence that they obtain through their abilities, values and character make my days full. I am so proud of how they have chosen to open up to practices such as meditation, body movement, and breathing exercises to enhance their daily routine as well as recognize their infinite self-worth.
How do you define success?
Success is defined as the ability to accept and celebrate yourself and others. Wealth through developed relationships and knowledge also contributes to overall well-being which includes both mental and physical health.
