Today we’d like to introduce you to G-Deltz.
Hi G-Deltz; thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
I grew up as an only child with divorced parents. I was bullied out of school from 5th grade through 9th grade. I needed help figuring out how to get people to like me. Beginning in 6th grade, I was a huge Michael Jackson fan; I mean huge. I used to do the entire Billie Jean Motown performance in my living room for my parents, wearing socks to moonwalk easier across the carpet. My passion and dream from a young age, inspired by the greatness of MJ and the enigma of making friends, was to be an entertainer. In 6th grade, I ended up performing at my school’s talent show in front of hundreds of people, and that was it; the spark was lit inside me and has never faded away. As a freshman at Texas Tech, I went to the free-for-student recording studio in the library’s basement on campus. My newly made friend John Wolf and I recorded G Walk in that studio, and I also recorded Atlantis as well as 42 Chances – all of which are released on DSPs. This was my first time in an official recording studio, and I recorded a track called Dressed In Ice under the name Hollywood G. My Hollywood G era continued as I dropped out the next year, bleached my hair, and moved to a hostel in South LA to chase my dreams. I didn’t have a car, but that hostel in Watts had a recording studio, and that’s all I needed.
I returned to Austin after that stint to save money, and then the pandemic happened. During the pandemic, I went through a point of reflection where I decided I didn’t want to play a blond hair alter-ego of myself and changed my artist name to a hyphenated version of my birth name, Grant Deltz. I lost 100 lbs in 2019 and 2020, grew a lot, and met several friends and mentors who have helped guide me in the right direction. I began playing shows in 2021 and released three of my favorite songs – Water Gun Emoji, Alpha Centauri, and Blake Lively. I started gaining momentum, especially with Blake Lively’s lyric video getting over 40k plays organically on YouTube. I celebrated a little too much, though. I was going out constantly, partying, and just living it up, going crazy until I cuffed up this OnlyFans model.
Then, through 2022 I became lost. I was in a very unhealthy and abusive relationship that made me forget who I was. I won’t go into detail, but I learned much about myself and others as I emerged from it. Many lessons that I needed to learn. Even with my momentum in 2021, I was mentally too immature to capitalize on that. I thought it was all about me, but it’s not. Since then, I’ve made music and entertainment my entire life. It’s a full-time job for me. I’ve realized what I need to be doing is creating experiences for people through my music, videos, and events. It’s about you. That led me to organize a massive water gun fight on July 28 at Zilker Park. Inspired by my song Water Gun Emoji – I’ve purchased 700 water guns for the event, which is free, and everyone is invited.
I’m putting out music consistently again. 6 songs since November. I just dropped Whole Foods Fresh, a high-energy track I love. I recently dropped a song with my friend Justin Starling called Nine Times, which is also incredible – a quick shoutout to Justin for all his advice and guidance. Where I’m now, I’m grateful. I have big plans, a ton of music and content on the way, and a vision for an incredible community I’m blessed to have the opportunity to build. I’ve been lost and depressed, but now I’m up. The world is your playground. I’m encouraging you to join me on the swings.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Mental health has been something I had to battle throughout my journey. I was very depressed when I dropped out of college, and in 2022 had a very unhealthy relationship that took a real toll on me. Even when my dream was starting, I was bullied so much for being who I was. After performing at my middle school’s talent show, I was made fun of and jumped in the bathroom. It doesn’t matter. I am who I am. It can’t stop me and won’t stop me. Just this week, I totaled my car and insurance isn’t helping out – and found out we’ll have to put down my cat of 13 years. It’s heartbreaking, and I’m feeling the adversity. Regardless, I’m grateful. Grateful for the 13 years, and grateful I walked away from the wreck.nI’m a big believer that things aren’t happening to me, but happening around me. I determine my own reality. I’m grateful and blessed to have the opportunity to chase my dreams every day. Nothing can take that gratitude away from me.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a recording artist. First and foremost, I rap and sing. I also have a deep passion for long-form videos, which I share on YouTube. What sets me apart from others is just being myself. I’m G-Deltz, Grant Deltz, in the flesh. Not Lil (Insert noun here). Beyond being myself, it’s not about me. My vision is to create a great community and bring experiences to that community. I’d rather have 100 die-hard supporters to build a culture with than a million listeners who couldn’t care less. That’s why I bought 700 water guns for my water gun fight in July. Even if someone doesn’t like my song Water Gun Emoji, anyone can have a great time squirting water at their friends and strangers in the Texas heat.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in perseverance. We all have a path that we’re on, and where we are is based on where we’ve been and who we are. You have to keep going. Good things will come when you have pure intentions and the will to keep fighting. As I said, things aren’t happening to me – they’re happening around me. I’m staying grounded in who I am, keeping my energy high and my intentions pure, and continuing on my path.
