Meet Gabrielle Edwards of Austin, Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Edwards

Hi Gabrielle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The summer between my sophomore and junior year of high school I attended a USC summer program to take a Sports Journalism class under the inspirational Shelley Smith and Jeff Fellenzer. After spending a month in Los Angeles I realized that pursing a career in sports journalism was going to be my life goal. In high school I started a film account called “elleedwardsfilms” where I posted sports edits and other videography content from around my hometown. My senior year of high school I took on one of my biggest film projects, creating an hour length documentary for Palma High School Football as they fought their way to California State Champions. After graduating high school I moved to Texas to attend the University of Texas at Austin where I plan to graduate with a major in journalism and minor in sports business and analytics and sports production. This fall, I have been continuing my videography work as a creative media intern for Texas Football.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My videography experience has been fun and exciting but has not been a smooth road. I have experienced numerous camera troubles such as scratched lenses and memory card malfunctions. Another struggle that I faced while developing my sports journalism and videography skills was balancing work, school, and extra curricular activities. Senior year I somehow managed to work on my documentary project, swim competitively year round, and apply to over 15 colleges. I am still trying to adjust to my new routine in college as UT is an academic demanding school and I am involved in multiple student organizations such as greek like (Zeta Tau Alpha), club water polo, and TSTV.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Texas Football Creative Media Intern I work game days and come into the office two or three times a week. On game days I work as a card runner and videographer. During the games I am in charge of uploading game photos, editing them, and submitting them to our shared server for in game Instagram posts. When I am not card running I find a spot on the sidelines and film in game content, occasionally going up into the student section to get fan or atmospheric content. I am most proud of my ability to work long hours and stay focused during game days, as interns are required to get to the stadium around 3 to 4 hours before kickoff and stay an hour or two after the game – average game days for us are about 8 to 10 hours.

What’s next?
My ultimate plan for the future is to become a sideline, ESPN, or Fox Sports reporter. I hope to gain broadcasting experience with UT’s student television station called TSTV. Throughout my college career I hope to gain experiences through internships with other big name companies such as Barstool Sports and Fox Sports.
