Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Arias.
Hi Isabel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had an enormous love for taking photos. Since I was about 15, I have been the friend who has suggested that we take pictures for our memories. Career-wise, though, it all started in 2013 when I received a fantastic gift: my DSLR camera, a Canon Rebel. I loved it! Coming from a small town, I was constantly busy with shoots, which gave me valuable practice in various areas, from maternity photos to weddings. In 2015, I moved to Oregon to attend beauty school. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out as planned, and life took over, leading me to put my photography career on hold in 2019. Between working multiple jobs, dealing with a family loss, and planning my wedding, I didn’t have the time or energy for photography. While my camera stayed stored away, I never considered selling it. I couldn’t bring myself to part ways with it, and a part of me always knew I’d pick it up again someday. That day finally came in 2022. I had recently given birth to my son. I was navigating the challenges of postpartum depression, all while feeling isolated and alone in a new city without family or close friends nearby. During a cleaning session, I stumbled upon my trusty camera, now ten years old. A smile spread across my face as I held it again, and a wave of joy washed over me. At that moment, I knew photography was the key to breaking out of my funk. I started by taking monthly photos of my son. Then, I offered free photoshoots to gain experience and build my portfolio. And here I am now, still growing and learning. This journey is far different from my first attempt at starting a photography business at 18. This time, a deeper level of passion and motivation drives me forward.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it was easy or smooth?
It was a bumpy ride coming back to photography. I was using a 10-year-old camera, hadn’t taken photos in over 3 years, and the photography world had changed drastically. Trends had shifted, and blurry photos were even something people loved! On top of that, I was dealing with postpartum depression, which affected my confidence. But I reminded myself that it’s okay to start over and relearn. YouTube became my best friend. I used it to learn everything from white balance settings and lighting to poses and editing. I even watched many behind-the-scenes videos to boost my confidence and avoid feeling lost during shoots. Another challenge was gaining recognition. I moved to Austin in 2021 and only knew a few people. While I practiced with some mom friends, I needed to expand my reach. Social media became a game-changer. I learned about social media marketing through network marketing and applied those lessons to my photography business. I created reels showcasing my work and funny photography content and even showed my face on stories to connect with potential clients. These efforts are paying off, and I’ve successfully expanded my clientele in Austin. My family generously gifted me a new camera and lenses for my birthday, allowing me to upgrade my equipment. I’ve grown, upgraded, and learned a lot. Challenges remain, like my goal of breaking into the wedding photography world. However, I’m up to the challenge and excited to see where this takes me!
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am a portrait photographer specializing in maternity, family, couples, seniors, and creative sessions. Currently, my favorite type of session is maternity photography. There’s something truly special about capturing that stage in motherhood – the joy radiating from both the mother and father as they anticipate their little one’s arrival. It’s a beautiful glow, and I love capturing it. I’m always proud of my maternity work and received great feedback on it. Clients often cite my personality and posing as strengths. Many tell me they appreciate how easygoing I am and how I have a knack for suggesting poses that flatter them. To capture my clients’ essence and personality, I believe it’s crucial to get to know them. For example, I wouldn’t suggest playful tag photographs to a shy couple. Instead, I’d ask them about their interests as a couple and tailor the session accordingly. Perhaps they’d prefer an intimate setting where I can step back and capture more candid, documentary-style moments. Getting to know your clients truly unlocks the potential for creating the best possible work together.
Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
Of course, when you ask what brings me joy, photography comes to mind first. It allows me to express myself creatively and be my best artistic self. I love capturing the session, then coming home and reliving the moment while I edit. It’s the best when I get happy responses from my clients, not only did they have fun at their session too, they love the memories I captured for them. Being a mom also brings me immense joy. Witnessing my son grow and develop is truly amazing. Beyond those two, I have other hobbies that spark joy. I’m a total foodie and love being in the kitchen, exploring new recipes, and experimenting with flavors. Reading is another favorite; I love getting lost in a good book and letting my imagination run wild. Finally, I’m not afraid to admit: I’m a gamer! I love the challenge and strategic thinking involved in video games. It’s important to embrace your passions and do what truly brings you happiness, and I’m fortunate to have several things in my life that do just that.
