Meet Izzy Lozada of Round Rock Texas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Izzy Lozada

Hi Izzy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was always fascinated by the world of tattoos. I frequently accompanied my parents to their tattoo appointments, eagerly observing and asking questions. My love for art has been a constant throughout my life—drawing was always my outlet, my form of expression. Upon graduating high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in art, and initially considered becoming an art teacher. However, my path took an unexpected turn, leading me to the tattoo industry, a field I never anticipated entering, but one I’m incredibly grateful for today.

As I got more and more immersed in the world of tattoos, my desire to become an artist in this space grew stronger. I spent countless hours drawing, refining my craft, and seeking an apprenticeship. I visited tattoo shops across Austin, but more often than not, I faced rejection or was told I’d never make it as an artist. One experience in particular, where I was laughed at by a shop, left me disheartened, and I almost gave up.

However, fate intervened when I was getting a tattoo with my sister. Unbeknownst to me, she had been speaking highly of me to the shop manager, and I had been sharing my aspirations with my tattoo artist. After my session, the manager asked to see my sketchbook. I quickly retrieved it from my car, and within no time, I was offered an apprenticeship. That moment was the start of an incredible journey, where I was fortunate to learn from an amazing group of artists who became my mentors.

Following my apprenticeship, my career continued to evolve as I moved to different shops, each experience contributing to my growth as an artist. I am currently at my fifth shop, Beelzink Tattoo Parlour, an all-women’s studio where I’ve found a supportive, close-knit community of artists who have welcomed me with open arms. The bond I share with my colleagues here is truly special, and I’m grateful to work in an environment where my passion feels like a calling, not just a job.

Looking back, I owe much of my success to the guidance of my mentors. One in particular encouraged me to participate in a tattoo competition at a convention. While I didn’t place, it was an invaluable experience that pushed me to challenge myself and grow. I continue to learn and develop every day, and it’s this ongoing growth that I love most about my work.

This journey has introduced me to so many incredible people, and the friendships I’ve forged along the way have made my career nothing short of amazing. I’m excited for the future and to continue evolving as an artist.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing, as life often throws unexpected challenges our way. However, I’ve always believed that these hurdles are temporary and part of the process. One of my earliest challenges came shortly after completing my apprenticeship when the first shop I worked at closed down unexpectedly. As a newly-minted artist, I found myself feeling uncertain and panicked, unsure of where to go next.

I eventually found another shop, but it turned out to be an unpleasant experience due to difficult management, and I lasted only a month there. My next position was at a well-known chain, which had its positives, but there was an individual there who consistently made things difficult for me. Despite these challenges, I was grateful for the opportunity, and I pushed through.

Eventually, I was offered a spot at a different shop, where I was fortunate to reunite with one of my old mentors. This environment was a breath of fresh air—everyone was supportive, and it was a place where I truly thrived. Unfortunately, that shop also closed down, and once again, I found myself on the lookout for a new opportunity.

After some time and persistence, I’m now at my current studio, Beelzink Tattoo Parlour, and I couldn’t be happier. It feels like the perfect fit, and the community here has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. While the road has had its fair share of bumps, each challenge has only made me stronger, and I’m grateful for the experiences that have brought me to where I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the early stages of my tattoo career, I began with American Traditional and Neo-Traditional styles. However, over time, I discovered my passion for fine line and stipple black-and-grey work. These styles allow me to express my creativity in a way that resonates deeply with me. My long-term goal is to expand into realism, which is an area I’m eager to explore and perfect.

As for what sets me apart, I wouldn’t necessarily say I stand out more than others; I view myself as just another artist who is deeply passionate about tattooing and eager to share my craft with those who trust me. That said, many of my clients have complimented me on my light hand and gentle approach, which I believe contributes to a more comfortable experience. I also use pretty small needles, which can help reduce discomfort during the process.

What I’m most proud of is my continuous growth. Every day, I feel like I’m learning something new, even if it’s something small. It’s this constant evolution that excites me the most about being a tattoo artist. But perhaps the most rewarding part of my work is seeing the reactions from my clients—the “I love it!” and “It’s amazing!” are the best affirmation I could ask for. Knowing that I’ve made someone happy and helped them express themselves through art is what truly makes me proud and reassures me that I’m in the right career.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to those just starting out would be to focus on your own growth and your art. It’s easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to others, especially when you see another apprentice progressing quickly. But remember, everyone learns at their own pace, and the key is to stay focused on your craft. As long as you remain true to yourself and your artistic vision, your growth will come naturally. Patience, persistence, and staying authentic to your art are the most important things to keep in mind on this journey.
