Today we’d like to introduce you to James and La Chelle Dougherty.
Hi James, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Austin, TX. I have always had a career in the construction industry beginning as a glazier. I then moved into the field of waterproofing and restoration before settling into the electrical industry. This is where I found myself challenged in a way I never had been before. I worked as an electrician for four years before receiving my Journeyman’s License and then my Master Electrician License three years later. I always knew I wanted to own an electrical contracting company that had integrity, cared for and respected the employees, and served the community while staying aligned with my faith. In 2012 that dream came to fruition when my wife, La Chelle Dougherty and I opened our 1st electrical contracting company together. She left her teaching career in support of this new chapter. We created a niche for ourselves by providing electrical services that pertained specifically to medical facilities. In 2019 we broadened our horizons and started a residential service division and rebranded ourselves to support our growth, our purpose and where we want to go in the future. Working together has challenged us and helped us see other perspectives in business, client relationships and how to work as a team. We have been working together for 10 years and married for 19. We have always supported each other in every professional avenue, goal or creative desire we have had. This has just been another endeavor that has challenged us and brought us closer together. It is our goal to give what has been given to us. We carry that throughout our professional lives in how we work together, make decisions for Magnify Electric and in financial offerings.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but we have learned a lot and we continue to learn everyday. Everyone faced challenges when the pandemic hit and we were no different. By the grace of God and our community, our business stayed afloat and grew. Learning the business side of the electrical industry has been an obstacle that we are continuing to improve upon and we believe that we can always improve. In business and in life we will make mistakes and there will always be problems that you face. With each problem or mistake you have an opportunity to grow and learn. Don’t let them be your downfall.

Magnify Electric specializes in commercial and residential electrical services such as medical offices, remodels, finish-outs, lighting installs and EV chargers. We are most proud of the ability to give back to our community by investing in nonprofits that mean something to us, treating our team members as family and our positive client feedback. Plus, we still have loyal employees that have been with us since the very beginning! I think what sets us apart from other electrical contractors is that we stand behind our work, truly care about our clients and we value the safety of both our electricians and clients.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We love that the Austin and surrounding hill country area has continued to grow, because it is good for business and opportunity. We also love the food, friendly people, UT and the weather! Our least favorite thing is the traffic!
