Meet Jan Goss of Civility Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Goss.

Hi Jan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Business has always intrigued me. From sweeping sidewalks for a nickel at six years old to working in my father’s drugstores through high school to starting my own businesses later in life. It fascinates me to observe how some businesses flourish while others fail. In my early adulthood, I was a stay at home mom. I loved raising my children, but I also loved making money, so I always seemed to find a way to create cash… I entered the Real Estate industry after my children left home and quickly rose as a multi-million dollar a month producer. I love meeting people’s needs and doing everything with excellence. As I built my Real Estate business, I became acutely aware that I experienced success that I did not necessarily deserve. There were many agents much more experienced and better equipped to handle the complex issues that can arise in a real estate transaction. I began to ask my clients why they hired me. Their answers surprised me. It wasn’t because I was the best or the brightest. Bottom line is they hired me because they felt like they could trust me. I began to look more closely at what brought me success. There are three key components that brought me success.

1. My faith – I believe in a power greater than myself and trust that I am led toward my highest good on a daily basis

2. I strive to do everything I do with excellence

3. I go the extra mile and do little things that are not required of me but simply make life better for others

Because of my strong belief in “Showing up Well”, I attended the Protocol School of Washington where I graduated in 2007. I went to school with ambassadors, diplomats, and the presidential staff. I learned the highest level of protocol training available in our country. I came home and launched the Austin School of Protocol that year and began training top Real Estate agents business protocols. Their businesses soared. The University of Texas in Austin hired me to work with graduate students. The hire rate of the graduating students went from 38% to 97% after taking my training. I knew I was on to something. I went inactive in Real Estate and jumped headfirst into the personal development space. In 2011 I got my first national contract, rebranded, and launched as Civility Consulting. Since that time the Civility Consulting team has served thousands of professionals across the United States. I have written numerous programs to further personal development and to help companies create a “Show up Well” culture. Everyone benefits when we show up well in life.

Personally, I have moved into the Executive Consultant role supporting business owners in taking charge of their own personal freedom as they run their companies. I have absolutely created a life that I love. I wake up and go to bed full of gratitude every day… I feel very fulfilled even through life’s ups and downs. As I built my career, I faced many personal struggles through death, divorce, loved ones dealing with addiction, and aging parents. I feel very fortunate to have the personal development tools I do and a strong faith to keep me on track. Life is not easy. Building businesses is not easy. However, it is all worth the effort. Making other people’s life better is a great way to spend my energy. I love my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the beginning, I tried to be everything to everyone. I was bootstrapping it financially so I fell for the thought that I “couldn’t afford” to hire a bookkeeper, accountant, attorney, etc. I soon found out that I could not afford not to hire the right people. A strong business foundation is essential. I also hired a business mentor – someone who had already been where I wanted to go. This taught me accountability. I have weekly accountability in my life to this day. It changes everything!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Civility Consulting, we stand for dignity, honor, and respect in every interaction. We call this a Show up Well culture. It begins with the top leadership so we only work from the top down. We help leaders become the role models and examples that their teams can be proud to imitate. We operate on this definition of civility: Civility is claiming and caring for one’s own identity, needs, and beliefs without degrading someone else’s in the process. With this strong foundation, it is easy to put behaviors in place that create a successful environment that produces success.
