Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennun
Hi Jennun, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Singer, rapper, musician, lyricist, melody maker, and creative director, I’m Jennun! Pronounced like “jenn – yoo – en,” consider me your next favorite female Latin/Pop/Rap/House Recording Artist based in Austin, Texas. I’ve been recording music professionally since the Summer of 2022, but I’ve envisioned myself on stages since I was a young girl.
Originally from Brenham, Texas, I moved to Austin in the Summer of 2021 after graduating with my Bachelor’s in Business Management from Texas A&M University – Central Texas. Knowing Austin was considered the “Live Music Capital of the World,” I actually didn’t originally move to Austin to perform live music, but to support it. I have practiced concert photography since 2018 and soon realized after living in Austin for a few short months, that I really wanted to be on the other side of the camera.
Though I grew up bullied for my height, weight, and deeper tone of voice, I did not allow the criticisms or rejections of others to stand in the way of me loving myself and following my dreams. Since moving to Austin, I began training martial arts, have lost over 50 pounds, began to showcase my voice through music, have felt more free to express myself through fashion, learned to model, and am learning to embrace my weird uniqueness. It’s very funny to think that I originally moved to Austin to start my Paralegal career, but God had other plans for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a picky creative spirit, I face many challenges in the music creation and production process. I’ve quickly learned that making music was way more complex than just creating a song. The process requires lots of time, care, skill, patience, and most importantly passion. Again, I was only considering dipping my toes into the world of music, not fully immersing myself but… life happens!
I am EXTREMELY thankful for all the love and support I’ve received in my first couple of years as an Artist. But, I can’t lie, I’ve struggled to learn how to deal with haters and those who take advantage of my kindness in this industry. Thanks to a handful of mentors and great friends, I’m learning to navigate the many challenges and I’m proud of my growth.
At the end of the day, as challenging as this career path is, I remember to be mindful of the fact that I’m “really out here” creating things that were once ideas and dreams. That alone is something to be proud of.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Other endeavors I have embarked on alongside creating music include social media management, content creation, influencer marketing, modeling, photography, event planning, event management, band management, business management, artist bookings, venue bookings, music video direction, and vocal coaching to name a handful. I do a lot, I know a lot, and I believe I am living proof that anyone can truly do anything they set their mind to.
Recent achievements include accepting membership into the Recording Academy’s Grammy U program, accepting the invitation to perform as an Official SXSW 2024 Artist, and releasing my 5th single, “Sensual” which is currently available on all streaming platforms. Additionally, I have been featured in many publications such as the Austin-American Statesman, Austin Women’s Magazine, Brenham Banner Press, and various local podcasts.
I understand this is only the beginning of my journey. I will experience more ups and more downs. But, I’m privileged to say I have more music to share with the world, many more invaluable lessons to learn, and more ideas to bring into existence.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always had a deep admiration for the arts and entertainment industry. I remember always wanting to join the local children’s chorus and musicals, but my parents weren’t able to afford those activities when I was a child. Thankfully, opportunities to participate in the arts became available to me in middle school, junior high, and high school. Having been heavily involved in band, theater, art, student government, leadership roles, and choir in high school, the path I’m currently journeying makes complete sense to me now.
Graduating high school, I received multiple scholarships to attend Blinn College where I began as a Music Education Major and sang alto/mezzo-soprano in all three of the college choirs and a local church choir. Discovering music theory was not my strong suit at the time, I changed majors and earned Associate degrees and certifications in both Psychology and Paralegal/ Legal Assistant studies. My love for learning more then drove me to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
Honestly, I would say I’m still growing up. There’s still so much to do in the world and to experience. There are more people to meet and more lives to change. I hope you stick around to witness the journey!
