Meet Jenny “Kung Fu Cowgirl” Hwang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny “Kung Fu Cowgirl” Hwang.

Hi Jenny “Kung Fu Cowgirl”, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was a drama and TV actress in China known as Zheng Diwen(郑迪文)and had begun to land roles in feature films when I met my future husband Gene in Beijing. Gene is from California, so we visited his parents in early 2020. Little did I know, this short visit would become indefinitely extended due to COVID-19. After being locked down in California for months, my husband and I embarked on an epic road trip across America, from San Francisco to Miami, visiting a different state each month for nearly a year. During this time, I became a certified yoga instructor and began teaching yoga to any friend, family member, or acquaintance that I could connect with. I even got my husband hooked on yoga! But due to COVID, I could only teach others via online streaming or video conferencing platforms. I yearned to teach classes in person, so my husband and I began dreaming up and creating a fresh, new yoga experience for beginners and experts alike—once I could teach yoga in-person again.

During our cross-country trip, we loved Austin, TX so much that we decided we would return and build our yoga brand in the ATX. Lo and behold, Gene and I established Kung Fu Cowgirl in ATX during the summer of 2021, and the rest is history: we’re known for constantly offering the freshest, funniest, and most social yoga classes you’ll ever experience. We like to think of yoga with Kung Fu Cowgirl as more than a yoga session—it’s a yoga party!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
With all that has been going on in the world since the pandemic started, I must say: this road has actually been surprisingly smooth! As with any new journey or business, we surely had our fair share of setbacks, but what I think is even more extraordinary is how much fortune we found on our journey. I think this “fortune” has a lot to do with the big heart and generosity of the people of ATX and Greater Austin. Our first public “yoga party” was an opportunity given to us by Chad and Angel, the owners of Smooth Village in Leander, TX. We love the fun and vibes at Smooth Village, and it will always remain dear to our hearts as our first official yoga party. Ms. Candice of Jordan International Montessori School gave us our first opportunity to host yoga after-school “parties” for preschoolers who mastered the downward dog and tree pose. Longtime natives of greater Austin embraced us from the get-go, and our good friend Michelle helped us secure a beautiful scenic venue at Lago Vista and took our yoga parties to the next level, like a fully-costumed Halloween session with “Witches’ Brew” sangria. Finally, the friendly staff at Oasis TX Brewing Company welcomed our proposal to hold Beer Yoga events in their beautiful Sunset Room overlooking Lake Travis, boasting the absolute best sunset in Austin, TX. Kung Fu Cowgirl still has major ambitions and milestones to achieve, but we feel blessed daily by all the generosity of the people we met and befriend.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Kung Fu Cowgirl LLC?
While the term “kung fu” might conjure up images of flying kicks and choreographed fighting, in China “kung fu” can also refer to any discipline that requires patience, energy, and time to become good at. With everything we do, we go hard like kung fu. But we also like to lower the threshold of participation. We want you to get involved and try something new—maybe something wild. That’s where the “Cowgirl” comes in. We believe life is about continually trying new things, learning new skills, and exploring the unknown. So with Kung Fu Cowgirl, we’re not afraid to try almost anything to attract newcomers to yoga, and we’re always offering something fresh to veteran yogis. From dressing up in costumes to engage with preschoolers to combining wine with yoga for adults looking to destress after a long day, to enticing beer-lovers who might not otherwise try yoga, we do it all. We go hard, but we keep it fun, often funny, and always challenging. During our first year, we ran successful after-school yoga classes for kids, hosted Wine & Yoga nights at residencies at various venues, and established a weekly Sunday Sunset Beer Yoga event at Oasis Texas Brewing Company on Lake Travis. Looking forward, we’re ecstatic about bringing our yoga parties to more businesses and corporations in ATX and Greater Austin. As we like to say, “Go hard like Kung Fu. Yeehaw like Cowgirl!”

What makes you happy?
I love encouraging people to try new things, even if they are a little hesitant at first. Nine times out of ten (if not more!), they are happier once they try it! Life is a series of worthy adventures, big and small, and sometimes it takes a little catalyst to get through the fear of failure, of looking silly, or of making a mistake. I like to think of myself as that little catalyst that helps you get over that hump and overcome the obstacle between you and your reservations. Let’s go! Yeehaw!
