Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Thomas
Hi Jeremy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Dallas, TX. I first moved to San Marcos for College in 2012 to attend Texas State University (TXST). I immediately fell in love with the Hill Country. The people, the scenic views, and nature/wildlife captivated me. I had my share of point-and-shoot cameras as a kid but never really took photography seriously until I moved to this area. My sophomore year at TXST, I made the decision that I needed to start capturing photos and videos of all the beauty that surrounds the Austin Metro area. I invested in my first DSLR camera and began taking photos of not just people, but also the endless landscapes, wildlife, and sunsets. Long before I even graduated, I already made up my mind that I’d stay in the Austin-San Marcos area regardless of my career journey because of how much I enjoy Central Texas. Nearly a decade later, I’m happily still a Hill Country resident and spend the majority of my free time capturing the beauty of Austin and San Marcos. I love to shoot portraits (i.e. graduation photos, family photos, etc.), action shots of people enjoying the sun at Zilker Park, Long-exposure shots of downtown Austin and San Marcos, and many other things. However, my favorite type of content to capture is storm cloud timelapses and lightning photography. I guess there truly is beauty in the midst of a storm!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Things weren’t always smooth-sailing. First, the learning curve of using a DSLR camera can be a bit intimidating for beginners. I definitely had frustrating moments of accidentally ruining photoshoots by not using the proper settings or equipment. Thankfully, practice makes “perfect”.
Post-graduation was also a bit of a hurdle. Though I am happily employed full-time by my alma mater today, it took longer than I anticipated to find full-time work after graduation. Luckily, struggling to find that first full-time job gave me ample free time to really sharpen my photography skills and discover what style(s) of photo/video I enjoy the most. Just before I began working for TXST, I secured an internship with Whole Foods Market in Downtown Austin. Though the commute from San Marcos wasn’t thrilling, my time with Whole Foods helped me form connections and get more familiar with what are now some of my favorite spots (nature trails, parks, and restaurants) in the Downtown Austin area.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a photographer/videography based out of San Marcos, TX serving the Austin-San Antonio metropolitan area. I truly believe I am a jack of all trades when it comes to photography styles. I do studio photography, sports photography, graduation photos, landscape, etc. I like to explore creative ideas with many of my photoshoots by using props (like colored smoke grenades, flags, etc.) whenever possible.
A majority of people seem to be most impressed with my weather-related content. While most people run indoors when a storm is approaching, I’m usually running outdoors with my DSLR to capture still images with my GoPro set up on a tripod to record time lapses of the clouds passing by. I’ve captured some pretty impressive lighting strikes over the past couple of years. One of my goals is to make a cinematic compilation of storm time lapses, photos, and audio that I’ll hopefully capture this year. I’m one of the few people that are actually looking forward to storm season.
