Today we’d like to introduce you to Johana Cunliffe
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Latin Bakery Austin in 2003 after very close friends and my family recommended me to start sharing my passion for entertaining friends and for baking, ultimately turning into a way of sharing unique delicious recipes and making a small business out of it. At first, renting space in a Ghost Kitchen, as the demand was growing we decided to take the risk and it is when we opened our fist store in October last year.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Transitioning from working at home to managing a kitchen has certainly been a significant change, but it’s also been a rewarding experience. One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered is effectively managing people in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. That said, I’m fortunate to have an incredible team by my side. Their dedication and collaboration are essential to our success, and I truly believe we wouldn’t be able to thrive without them
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Yes, I’m often recognized for my alfajores and empanadas. They’ve become a signature part of what I do. Both dishes hold a special place in my heart because they’re deeply tied to tradition and culture, yet I love putting my own unique twist on them. It’s always rewarding to see people’s reactions when they try them, and I take great pride in perfecting every batch.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I envision our business continuing to grow and gain even more recognition, especially here in Austin. I see us expanding into new neighborhoods, building a larger local presence, and reaching new customers. Additionally, I’m excited about the possibility of shipping our alfajores to other parts of the U.S. to share our flavors with a wider audience. With our focus on quality and consistency, I believe we can make a lasting impact both locally and nationally.
