Meet John Vaughn of Downtown Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Vaughn.

Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was working in the corporate world and hating my life. I saw a video on YouTube of a woodworker making a table and I wanted to try it. I realized how expensive the kind of table he was making was, and I decided to start with cutting boards. I sold the first few and started doing markets, selling on Etsy, and to friends/family.

I started thinking about how I could get free wood and continue expanding my creativity, and started to offer Christmas tree decorating services, and tree removal which I dried out and then used in my wood working company.

A year later, I had the opportunity to do it full time and took that opportunity. Now I do woodworking full time and love it. We work with hi rise apartments to decorate their lobby and resident homes for the holidays under deck the trees, and furnish the same with furniture and home goods under woodsman’s creations!

I am a huge outdoor enthusiast and spend lots of time outside and in state/national parks. We pride ourselves on using wood from local naturally felled trees. Meaning we use wood from trees that have died or naturally fallen over for some reason within 125 miles of Austin.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I had to overcome my perfectionism, fear of failure and success if that makes any sense, and the financial feast or famine has been challenging. It’s also challenging when others can make the same product overseas and ship them in bulk at much lower prices. Educating people as to why a bamboo cutting board or dining table from wayfair are of lower materials and local handmade is better but more expensive is challenging. But that’s all apart of business, and fine focusing on clients who value local workmanship and high quality materials has been our approach.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We focus on handmade furniture and home goods made from locally sourced naturally felled trees. We are best known for allowing a completely customizable experience, local delivery, and crafting an experience and product that will last a lifetime.

I’m really proud of the time we give back by mentoring and teaching other artists, using sustainably sourced and local materials when at all possible,

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I’ll be getting married to my beautiful fiancé and her two kids next year in Banff Canada! They are the most important thing to me.
