Meet Jonathan Garza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Garza.

Hi Jonathan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been doing pop up gallery and event spaces for around seven years now. I love to promote artists and the fun and excitement of hosting events. I’m also a photographer and have helped artists photograph their art for print for years, people have always asked where to print and best practices. About two years ago a friend and I decided to buy this printer to do fine art, over the last two years we have practiced a lot with art for our own art shows, printing for friends and our selfs today we offer it as a service. The last four months, we have opened a new art space /sharing space with Almost Real Things. We have been getting more customers and doing more jobs, we are excited for the growth and to be helping more artists make more art. We produced all of the art for our September art show with Raphael Umscheid, Dominique Noel, and Natassia Wilde.

We have added tshirt production to fine art printing and are excited to work with more bands, artists to make great merch and branding materials.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first printer we held on to from a friend’s shop closing we held for years hoping to roll out and then when we had the space ready the printer was too old to be serviced but it had started the dream. We bought a new printer and then it took quite a few misprints to learn but now we have it down to a little science even though every once in a while you’re watching something come out and catch it coming out the wrong direction or size.

The screen printing was funny as well.

Then we helped a friend recoup this barn place; we set the screen printshop up there and had it all ready then halfway through our first production run, the landlord lost it and made us move, it took us a month to reset up and print the first run of shirts we had to do.

Now we love the space were in for the printshop and could not have better ties.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We often work with artists on their first sets of prints or on an unusual size or project. Sometimes it is also the first time we have been asked to do something like that and then I have to research too how to accomplish their goal. I often feel like the artist and I are on my team trying to get this perfect print. We like to go over the options and make sure the sizing, paper and border are just the way the artist likes. We like to print the first proof with the artist there and they always love to see it coming out and the great thing about doing it together and being small is we can make changes right away and get it just right for their project.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think fast turn around, custom jobs, smaller items, as the artists get more experience their jobs get bigger weather in scale or in number of prints, we are working to be able to handle all those needs. We see artists becoming brands, we want to partner with certain artists on their merch and marketing in the future helping develop their brands and product lines in collaboration. We think NFT’s are changing the art world rapidly and are looking to encourage artists in that and figure out how to blend physical merch and NFT.
