Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonny Catanzano.
Hi Jonny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Currently own Tailored Health and Fitness online coaching and in-person training, based in Austin, TX. I have been operating on my own since 2019 in the Austin area. I also previously worked for SixPackAbs.com, running their online coaching department and supplements. Before that, I worked for 10 years for the Trex company, a Fortune 500 company in the building materials sector. I was an outside sales rep covering Texas and Oklahoma. I started working for them out of college in Knoxville, TN. I graduated from the University of Tennessee and played football there as a walk-on cornerback from 2002-2006. When I moved to Texas, I started attending fitness and physique competitions. This was how I got into coaching as a side job since I loved educating people about health, fitness, building muscle, and competing on stage. I did this as a side hustle while working at Trex until 2016, when I shifted careers from selling building materials to selling fitness through supplements and coaching.
Since I started coaching and training in 2011, I have worked with over 300 clients while garnering a high retention rate (clients that stick around because they get results.) Some clients have worked with Tailored Health and Fitness since 2019 and continue to. We offer online coaching and personal training (Austin area for that, HIT Athletic gym), while the online coaching I have a reach as far as Alaska down to Australia. In the background, I obtained multiple certifications through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) as a certified trainer, nutritionist, corrective exercise specialist, and golf fitness specialist.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No. SixPackAbs.com was a great segue into fitness and coaching. It was a startup fitness company with a huge YouTube following when YT was younger (2011-1018). Towards the end of my employment there, they were invested in by an investment firm and went in a completely different direction than I thought. Long story short, the company went into a nose dive after purchase, and after a large part of the organization’s core that brought success left. I, however, stuck around until the end to try to work things out since I still believed, at the time, in the company’s direction. Fortunately enough for me, I could see the writing on the wall and created the Tailored Health and Fitness, LLC, in the background of my last few years at SPA (with their permission). So, at the end of the day, when things didn’t work out at SPA, I had a seamless transition to a company I already had up and running in the background.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started competing in 2012, so this was a 10-year journey that I completed, and I couldn’t be more proud of what I did. I also earned my IFBB Pro card in the classic physique division in 2012. I placed very well at regional and national shows over the years (where you can turn ‘pro’), so it was quite an up-and-down journey. I stuck it out through thick and thin, the ups and downs. It took me that long because I started in a different division (men’s physique) and had to change my physique. It was good at the time. I could win local shows with no problem; however, when you go to the national level, it’s a different ball game, and you must be super competitive. I also pride myself in my education at UT, fitness, and my actual field experience in fitness. I started training in gyms at 12 years old in Pittsburgh, PA, and have never stopped since then. The longest I have gone not getting a workout in these last 27 years has been about 5 days. I was bred to educate and show others how to care for their bodies through fitness and nutrition, which can lead to enhanced longevity for a long and quality life.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
More boutique-style gyms opening that fill very particular niches, will they survive? Gyms offer many amenities at a high price (ice baths, sauna, massage areas, recovery areas, common workspaces for members, etc.). Trainers will continue to train. I trained online for almost 10 years before covid ever happened. We saw a tremendous shift to online coaches, but how many will stay around? How many can afford to call it a full-time job? Social media is a bit of smoke and mirrors right now, with some ‘coaches’ earning a lot more through their sponsorships than actual training or coaching. How long is that sustainable?
