Hi josh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Blue Starlite is the worlds one and only MINI URBAN BOUTIQUE Drive-In Movie theater – 11 years running! A boutique drive-in movie theater for the next generation of outdoor movie lovers.
That’s right, We are the guys and gals that jump started the NEW DRIVE-IN RESURGENCE that is currently sweeping the nation! We only take 15-40 cars a night depending on our location and screen so YOU get all the attention you deserve on your night out with us. The most intimate, personal, one of a kind Drive-in experience in the world!
We concentrate on childhood favorites, drive-in classics, indie films, art house, Cult, and Gen X/Y pop culture faves . A new drive-in experience is born right in the heart of the city.
We ARE the drive- in movie theater for the modern age.
We have locations on a roof top on a parking garage in downtown Austin at 300 San Antonio st. and our main location is on the north east side of Austin at 500 VFW rd.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Its been a bumpy ride for 15 years. making it work through 15 years of a forever changing Austin. But we created the Blue Starelite to be a Drive-in that CAN make it through a citys changing landscape so we soldier on. DUring the pandemic we were the only cinema open within 3 hours of central Tx. We were considered a life line to having something of a normal life where you coudl go out despite the need to cover up! Since then we have worked to downsize back to the small and nimble little local biz that can service whoever wants a one of a kind night out on the town, your car, at the movies.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Josh Frank is an entrepreneur, writer, producer, director and composer. He has penned numerous plays, including an authorized adaptation of Werner Hergoz’s Stroszek, screenplays, including an adaptation of Mark Vonnegut’s The Eden Express, and musicals, including The Jonathan Richman Musical. He is the author of Fool The World, the Oral History of the Band Called Pixies (St. Martin’s Press USA/Virgin Books U.K.) and In Heaven Everything Is Fine – The Unsolved Life of Peter Ivers (Simon and Schuster/Free Press). In April 2014, Harper Collins released his novel, The Good Inn, co-written with Black Francis of the Pixies. Last year his 4th book A Marx Brothers and Salvador Dali lost story “Giraffes on Horseback Salad was released by Quirk Books and went on to be nominated for an Eisner Award. Over the last decade, Frank has worked with some of the most interesting and innovative musicians, filmmakers, producers and artists in the industry, including Black Francis, David Lynch and Harold Ramis. Frank has also interviewed over 400 of America’s most notable names in entertainment for his books and screenplays. With the rest of his time, he runs his Blue Starlite Mini-Urban Drive-In Movie Theaters.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love using the “studio” app on my iphone to create cool ads for the Biz, its like a mini photoshop on your phone. Im a fan of supporting other cool local business’s who create new cool expereinces to keep austins landscape funky.

- $45 car slot for 2 with concessions
- $200-$800 for private parties for smaller groups
- $900-$2500 for private parties for big corporate events!
