Meet Joshua Fritsche of Johnson City Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Fritsche.

Joshua Fritsche

Hi Joshua, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
While working as the winemaker for William Chris Vineyards, I started a rose-focused brand named after my daughter, Tatum Rose, in 2012. Over the years, I slowly built up production to include red and white wines sourced from some of the best growers in the state. Production is currently around 1,000 cases.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s winemaking in Texas. It’s always a struggle. From drought to late spring freezes and brutally hot summers, there is always a curveball thrown by Mother Nature.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently the winemaker for Ron Yates Winery in Hye, TX, where I can produce all of my wines for the Tatum brand in their facilities. Rose’ was what built this little brand. At the time of the first vintage, Texas had a depressing lack of roses’. The wine style makes sense here due to our climate. From the first vintage, it had a cult following and helped build rose as a wine that Texas can compete with worldwide. I have since grown the portfolio to include reds and whites, focusing on Rhone varieties from Southern France.

Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Postmodern Winemaking by Clark Smith is a great resource, although difficult to follow sometimes as it’s a pretty in-depth/nerdy text.
