Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Fay.
Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well I grew up in musical life. Started viola at six. Then to the trombone. French horn. And more. Until at 16, I was teaching myself guitar and programming on a triton Kong keyboard. Singing in coffee shops and then I went to my first rave or EDM show. And I’ve been a producer and emcee since. I fell in love with drum and bass and hiphop and the whole rave culture and hiphop culture that was the 2000s… I started emceeing for so bigger djs like DJ. Fusion. DJ DRIZZT. DJ Decepticon. Dj Brocka J and T Junglist. The great Reverend Kathy Russel. And doing shows all over the state of Texas and eventually Colorado and California up to Washington all the way down to Tennessee. The whole time I was heavy into production always on my laptop if on the road or in the studio if at home or where there is one on the road. I always had a passion for making the music long before I started emceeing. Inspired by J Dilla and Madlib Kankick Ohno and many others. Hip hop was running thru me as well as dnb. Which led me being one of three members of a large hiphop group named KILL CITY. While doing all this, I still hosted drum and bass events and future rnb events. I had put out my first record in 2006 here in 2017, I was determined to get signed and release music. Well, thanks to Middlemen digital and Thomas overly and king yogi (rest in peace), I made that a reality and then again released on ILLLOGIC RECORDS. And then I was in a group of producers just formed and I saw some of the people treating another member wrong and I stood up for her. Because it was the right thing to do. That ends up being a large dnb and dub producer unsub from NZ and she sells me on starting my own label. So here I am two years into owning a label that specializes in dnb and hip hop lofi and sister label to a larger phdm records from nz! Quaziscience Recordings released over 24 songs in the last two years.
As a producer and emcee I go by J. Augustus (aka Saint Jae) and the record label is QUAZISCIENCE RECORDINGS (QZR).
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not been the smoothest of roads. I have attacked the music with all of me for all these years. Sometimes money is short. Sometimes it’s long… it’s very unpredictable and even more so in our post-pandemic lockdown world. You just have to believe that you will get to where you want. Really believe it… and walking thru all the rest is the fun part. Next thing you know your at your goal… life is good.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an audio engineer and sound designer who also does foley and fx for gaming and film.
I was contracted by Northrup Grumman to do all the audio and sound for a military training simulator.
I also did all the audio and recording and post audio for the film THE GAUNTLET.
I am a Record Label Owner. I am an emcee and writer. Producer of many types of music. And a street artist/ graffiti artist.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes. You never know when the world is going to stop. Completely. I mean just stop. So you must be able to adapt to that and carve a lane and find your path. Longevity is important. And mental health is very important. It’s easy to lose one’s grip when alone for long amounts of time. I def learned to reach out and stay in contact with and be open about being available for friends in need. And also being open about times where you may not be so good. Just overall, check on your people always. And tell em you love em more.
