Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Laws.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I remember getting my first polaroid camera in elementary school and then falling in love with photography through the yearbook and photographing all the sports during high school. Soon after, I began doing lifestyle sessions and shot my first solo wedding as a senior in high school after shadowing another wedding photographer for a bit. I absolutely fell in love with it! I just loved being able to freeze moments that you can look back and relive all of the feelings and emotions through! There are so many incredible people that helped me along the way and I am so thankful for the community I have found in being a photographer.
My husband and I founded our first wedding photography business while we were engaged and shot weddings for three years before moving overseas. Once we settled back in America I opened the business back up as Sweet Valley Photography.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Restarting my business after taking three years off was difficult! The wedding industry and trends have changed and the market is so saturated with (incredible) photographers. It has been hard but I’ve enjoyed the challenge and have learned so many new things which have grown my creativity.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in natural light, fine art weddings and shoot both digital and film photography. My heart is to serve my clients well while capturing timeless and beautiful images that are unique to their stories. It is my hope that they’d look back at their wedding photos in 5, 20, or 60 years and feel all of the same emotions rush in again- from the smallest details to the biggest moments.
After working with my clients, we usually walk away as life-long friends! I’ve even gotten to photograph some of the wedding couple’s as they have had kids and grown their families through the years! I love the relationships that I’ve been able to form through my job, it’s been really special.
How do you think about happiness?
Capturing the in-between moments makes me so happy; like the groom kissing the bride’s forehead during the reception, or first time the bridesmaids see their girl in her dress, tears falling from dad’s proud eyes, or the flowers left sitting on the table while everyone is dancing. All of the little moments (even if imperfect) add to the emotion and feel of the day. These moments are so special to me to capture, so that my clients may relive their day forever.
