Meet Kelly Ellison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Ellison.

Kelly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Tiktok food influencer, a mom of five (including my son with Angelman Syndrome). I also serve on the City Council in my hometown.

Although I have a degree, the care for my son put my career on hold. The life I imagined since a young girl had taken a whole new path. Daycares were not equipped to handle the care for my son and I was forced to create new ways to financially care for my family. My passion has always been food and my love language is cooking for others. I started cooking and delivering meals from my home to pay our bills and put food on our own table. I also taught myself photography, photo editing & marketing.

Through those years, my son also took a turn for the worse. His seizures had become debilitating. I poured my heart and soul into research and how I thought food was the culprit. I developed a specialized anti-inflammatory diet that saved my son’s life and others with Angelman Syndrome.

Fast-forward… COVID hit and it hit my family really hard financially. It closed the door to some of my largest clients, therefore it directly affected us. It was a really rough year, but we rolled with the punches.

I was “safety stalking” my teenage daughter on Tiktok when I made the decision to share what I love doing and posted my 1st cooking video towards the end of December 2020. Fast-forward, again, 11 months later… my love language brought me to where I am now… KellyCooksTexas is creating food ads for some of the largest brands, has over 350k followers on Tiktok, was picked up by a talent agency (The Food Renegades)… and here I am here sharing my story with you.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have always been behind the camera, so learning to video myself has been a fun/funny challenge.

Also, I can’t ignore the fact that I have five kids in a small home while having a video production studio in my kitchen. To be a fly on the wall would be amusing, to say the least.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create short cooking videos for social media. My style is Southern comfort food with a flare of TexMex. You won’t find many dishes without jalapenos or cilantro. I am most proud of myself to always think outside of the box and create original recipes that fit my style.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Austin is beautiful, especially Lake Travis. It’s a great combination of city and country. The hussle and bussle can be a little much at times, but it’s a fun city.
