Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerby The Photographer.
Hi Kerby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a photographer/creative director born on the south side of Chicago. My passion for photography came from the influences of the Windy City culture, from the music to the fashion and lifestyles found within the city. I like to use a unique approach by using locations you may not have thought of using for photo shoots and working with local talents, like models and stylists, to execute my concepts and projects. I feel what makes me different from most creators is how exclusive I am because I enjoy working with people I genuinely connect with. I believe that being too accessible ruins the longevity of the impact you are trying to make as a creative individual. I always say to my artist friends know your worth! Because it is very easy to be taken advantage of in this line of work.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things get difficult at times being a photographer because you can come across models who demand pay even when they’re inexperienced. You will have clients trying to get you to do free work for them, but in this business, you need to know your worth, and like I always say, “Good photos aren’t cheap and cheap photos aren’t good.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I specialize in photography. I’m known for great photos and gorgeous models. What sets me apart from these other photographers is that my work is unique, and I know how to work my angles, and you can tell each photo shoot I book gets a lot of thought and time put into them. I’m most proud that people come and shop with me when looking for a good work ethic and amazing quality photos.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
I love to network! Greet, smile, compliment, and engage the conversation with what you do and why you interrupt. 9 times out of 10, you will gain another follower/fan or client! Not being so shy and quiet has worked for me because closed mouths don’t get fed.
