Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren McGurn.
Hi Lauren, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
A few years ago, I was in the corporate grind of the digital marketing world. The burnout was real, and as exhausted as I was every day, I was unfulfilled and frustrated. I felt like I had so much creative energy I wasn’t using. My friend and I decided to start a men’s athleisure company. We saw a gap in the menswear marketplace, and we were seeking an exciting challenge in our careers (he was going through a similar burnout). Fast forward a few years, our company was a successful “side hustle”, exceeding expectations through word-of-mouth and reviews alone. We created a great product people loved. There was so much more I wanted to pursue, but my business partner and I had conflicting visions for the future. We decided to part ways, and I was determined to take what I learned and the confidence I built and started a new clothing brand that was aligned with my vision. Enter: Sunderday.
I am now entering my second year as the founder of Sunderday (sunderday.com), and it’s been an awesome ride. We currently offer five hoodies, and I’m working on new styles and materials that will launch soon. Sunderday is becoming known as a “perfect summer hoodie” by many of our customers, and we’re really taking off in the surf and sports communities. We recently partnered with a few college and professional athletes and have plans to work with artists for pattern collaborations in the near future. We are also planning on growing our line over the next year, offering sweat sets and other high-quality staple athleisure.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I come from a marketing background and had zero experience in design and fashion when I started out. I am self-taught (thank you YouTube!), but made it a point to connect with as many brilliant people as I could meet in the design and fashion space. It was difficult to build that network, but I saw the value and became a sponge for advice and insight. There are advantages of being a sole business owner, but I’ve learned it’s extremely important to surround yourself with advisors and mentors that can help you grow, learn, inspire, and hold you accountable.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’ve built the hoodie that delivers the style of Saturday with the comfort of Sunday. Welcome to Sunderday. Sunderday hoodies are made from organic cotton, have a unique tailored fit, a quarter-zip hood, and fine details that stand out from the crowd.
Sunderday is on a mission to make elevated, functional, and comfortable clothing that makes you feel and look great.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love: I’ve lived in a handful of US cities, but Denver has always held a special place in my heart. It’s home! Nothing beats the Colorado sunshine and the endless year-round activities. What I’d pass on: These real estate prices! I was considering becoming a first-time homeowner, but I think that dream may stay on hold for a while longer – haha.
