Meet Leonard Logsdail

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leonard Logsdail.

Hi Leonard, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in London at 21 years of age and moved the the US 30 years ago to begin again. I’ve traveled extensively selling suits in 9 different countries and made suits for some on the influential men of our time.

Only four people touch a suit that I make. I measure the client, cut the paper pattern and then the cloth. I do the fittings. Then I have the jacket maker and pants maker and the person who sews the buttonholes. It’s is a true handmade suit.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth, it was not! Starting business at 21 meant you “thought” you knew it all, but the reality was my inexperience cost me a lot of money and clients initially. However, when it’s your own dime that’s on the line, you learn a lot quicker than most people.

It was a struggle to build my initial clientele. It was a struggle to build another client base when I started traveling to Europe. The same goes when I started visiting the United States to sell suits. Then I gave up everything to follow my American dream and moved here to start all over again.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make handmade suits. It’s called bespoke! The skills I possess start with a desire to provide for my family as best I can. I do this only by producing the best garment I possibly can. This is what I am most proud of. I go the extra mile to ensure my clients are happy. I am honest to a fault. If I am unhappy with a garment I am making I will throw it away and start from scratch, not telling my client. It has to be right. I am at the top of my field making the finest handmade garments in the country, but I strive to learn more and am humble enough to accept and adopt new concepts if I think it will improve the garment I deliver

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In London, I was a member of the national tailoring organization. In fact, I became the youngest Vice President in its history.

In the US, I joined the Custom Tailors and Designers association where I met many talented people. I would urge those starting in the profession to join.
