Meet Lew Apollo of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lew Apollo

Hi Lew, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello, I’m Lew Apollo, and my musical journey started in the small, frigid town of Barnum, Minnesota. Growing up in Northern Minnesota, I was surrounded by a rich musical legacy, including the fact that Bob Dylan hails from this region. My dad’s deep admiration for Dylan had a profound influence on me. His love for Dylan’s storytelling and innovative spirit inspired me to appreciate the power of music in conveying emotion and narrative.

From a young age, my parents were pivotal in nurturing my musical passion. They bought me my first guitar and patiently taught me how to play. My mom and dad didn’t just give me the tools; they shared their love for music with me. My mom’s enthusiasm for Prince was another major influence. His genre-blending creativity and dynamic style were a constant presence in our home, shaping my approach to music and encouraging me to explore my own unique sound.

As I entered my teenage years, I fell deeply in love with blues music, drawn to the raw emotion and exceptional guitar work of artists like Albert King, Buddy Guy, and B.B. King. Their profound impact on blues music helped shape my own musical style and direction.

With the release of my debut full-length album coming in Spring 2025, I carry forward the inspiration from my parents, the musical heritage of Northern Minnesota, and the influence of my blues heroes.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been countless struggles that traditonally come with supporting yourself as an artist, however, the passing of my father in Fall 2022 was a defining moment in my life, deeply affecting my drive and approach to music. Losing him, who was not only my father but also my best friend and hero, left a profound void that I needed to navigate. In the midst of my grief, I found a renewed sense of purpose in my music.

His influence on me was immense—his passion for music, his encouragement, and his unwavering belief in me were instrumental in shaping who I am. In the wake of his loss, I felt a compelling need to honor his memory in a way that felt true to him and to me. This personal drive became a powerful catalyst for my artistic journey.

I channeled my emotions and memories into my music with a newfound intensity. The desire to create something meaningful and authentic became stronger than ever. I wanted my music to reflect not just my experiences but also the lessons and values my father instilled in me. This quest to honor him pushed me to delve deeper into my artistry, striving to carve out my own unique path in the music world.

Becoming my own artist and establishing a distinct voice has become a way to pay tribute to him. Each song I write, each performance I give, is infused with the essence of who he was and the impact he had on my life. I’m driven by the need to create art that resonates on a personal level, not just for myself but for others who might find solace or inspiration in it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m most proud of how my music has managed to connect with people, especially those going through hardships and dark times. Seeing my debut EP, JUNGLE, resonate so deeply with listeners and hearing how it has provided comfort and solace during their struggles means the world to me. Knowing that my songs, which delve into themes of isolation and healing, have helped others navigate their own challenges is incredibly fulfilling. It’s this profound connection with fans and the impact of my music on their lives that I cherish most about my career.

What sets me apart from other musicians is the unique blend of influences that shape my sound and the deeply personal approach I take in my songwriting. I draw inspiration from a mix of artists like Hozier, Arctic Monkeys, and Leon Bridges, creating a fusion that’s both distinctive and original. My music weaves together cinematic storytelling, powerful energy, and soulful emotion, resulting in a sound that’s uniquely mine.

Moreover, I strive to infuse my work with authenticity and vulnerability. Addressing complex emotional themes, particularly after the loss of my father, has become a central part of my music. I use my art as a means of healing and connection, offering support to those who might be experiencing similar struggles. This heartfelt and personal approach, combined with the way my music resonates with listeners facing difficult times, is what I believe truly sets me apart in the industry.

What makes you happy?
My wife, family, dog, and an iced americano make me happy. Good food with good friends, and good music. But as an artist what makes me truly happy is seeing the positive impact of my music on others. Knowing that my songs resonate with listeners and provide them with comfort during tough times is incredibly fulfilling. There’s nothing quite like hearing how my music has touched someone’s life or helped them navigate their own struggles.

Another source of happiness for me is the creative process itself—the moments of inspiration, writing lyrics, and crafting melodies that feel deeply personal. It’s in these moments that I feel most connected to my art and to the legacy I’m building. Performing live and feeling the energy and connection with the audience also brings me immense joy. Those interactions and shared experiences are reminders of why I started making music in the first place.

Additionally, I find happiness in the support and encouragement of my family and fans. Their belief in me and their engagement with my music provide a strong sense of purpose and motivation. Ultimately, it’s the combination of making a meaningful impact through my music, the joy of creating, and the support from those around me that brings me the greatest happiness.
