Meet Lisa Turkovic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Turkovic.

Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Little Owl Baking Company started in February of 2018. It was born out of a desire to be creative and a drive for entrepreneurship. The inspiration came from an Instagram post I ran across one day of what is called a Tart Cake. It was basically a cake made from tart dough in the shape of a number. I tried my hand at a few of those, but after lots of trials and many, many errors, I landed upon using actual cake. I learned through experimentation what works in terms of decor, and it naturally evolved to what it is today. I still love finding new and unusual decor items, especially if I can support other local artisans in doing so. I’m always on the hunt for fun new cake flavors, too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Is owning a business ever a smooth road? In my experience, the answer is no! I had a really hard time when all the feedback I received when I started wasn’t positive. I took it very personally and almost gave up a few times. However, I eventually learned that you simply cannot please everyone, especially when it comes to flavor. It is such a subjective thing! Also, finding the right packaging and branding has had its share of challenges. However, I have learned to hold the knowing in myself that I put an immense amount of love, care, time and creativity into my work and that feedback is the most important.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make curated number, letter and shape cakes. I thrive on learning about the person who is receiving the cake and doing my best to incorporate elements that reflect them. I love finding new and supporting known local artisans. If their product can fit on my cakes, I will do everything I can to make it happen. I am drawn to items that hold meaning and symbolism, and if I can make them safe to put on a cake, it’s a good day. Color palettes are always fun to figure out as well as unusually shaped cakes (my current favorite are zodiac signs.)

To be honest, the baking part isn’t my most enjoyable part of my business. A lot of folks are surprised by that, but it’s true. I have developed a love for it over the years, though. It is quite fascinating how the ratios of each ingredient really affect the outcome of the cake. There is definitely a meditative quality to baking and I do enjoy thinking of new flavors, too.

Right now, I am in the throes of creating the most perfect brownie cake. My husband is a willing taste tester, too. I

I have taught myself how to make French macarons, and that has been an often frustrating yet very rewarding challenge. There’s always room to grow in the baking area, and I am here for it.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my baking business journey is to let go of the judgment of others. There is simply no way to please every single person, and the best I can do is offer a product made with integrity, love, attention and creativity.
