Today we’d like to introduce you to Margie Aston.
Hi Margie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, there! My name is Margie Aston and I am so excited to be here! I am a Mama to two beautiful little girls and a precious pooch, the wife of the most amazing husband, a jewelry maker, and the owner of a fabulous small business where I create the most magical glittered tumblers, “Glittercorn Fairy.”
My life is so full and I am beyond blessed to be able to stay home with my children, care for my family, and spend my days finding ways to make others happy. Nothing makes my heart happier than making others smile -regardless of who it is. So, when I’m not managing the day-to-day operations of Aston, Inc., I spend my time filling my bucket by creating little tokens of happiness. Whether I’m working on my “day job” for Dot & Dash Design (a locally owned and operated company) or my “free time” creating my sparkly, personalized, one-of-a-kind, and made to order tumblers, I GET to spend my time in my “happy place.”
The last couple years have been hard on all of us. For me, it started back in July of 2019, I lost my mother. Then, in December of 2019, I lost one of my dearest friends. By the time Covid hit, I was pretty much in a funk. By the end of March, I was sad and desperately trying to find ‘something” to brighten up the world. Or if nothing else, my world.
One sleepless night, I turned to YouTube to find something mindless, relaxing, or anything to give me a good laugh. I found a tutorial on “glittered tumblers.” I watched, and I watched, and I watched. I couldn’t stop watching all the magic bring creating!! All the sparkle, shine, glitter fabulousness! (I am certain my Mama must have hung bling over my crib. I’ve loved all things “blingtastic” since I was a tiny girl! Anyway.) It was fantastic! I couldn’t stop watching!! Think: “Lions, and tigers, and Bears, Oh My!” except it was glitter, and mica, and paint, Oh my!! It was also 6:00 am and I was wide awake and ready to make some magic! I knew I (!!!) had to try it. I made a dauntingly long list of all the supplies that I would need…but. I could totally justify the expense because it was exactly the creative outlet my heart needed to get out of this funk!
One tumbler turned into ten. Ten turned into twenty. My husband (Mr. Practical) was in full support of my newfound hobby, however, he insisted we didn’t need to keep all the sparkly goodness for ourselves. Sooooo. I started gifting them to friends, family…strangers. The response was greater than I could have ever imagined! I more I gave away, the more others wanted to gift them to their friends and family. One day, my dear friend Cathy and I were chatting… she told me I needed a shop. She said, “Margie! You are the Glittercorn Fairy and you need to sprinkle that magic everywhere! You need a shop. You need a page. You need a website!” I wasn’t sure, but with every new creation, I’d think of her… She was right. I AM the GlittercornFairy!! And in doing so, what I found out was that I wasn’t the only one that needed -or craved – something to smile about. MY (!!) creations were having a profound impact on people… whether they were giving or receiving, people were SMILING!!! These weren’t just cups…they weren’t just sparkly hydration vessels! They were smiles for days! They were joy-makers for those who were seeking something (anything) to bring them a smile!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Laughing. Before I became a wife and Mama, I earned my MBA and worked as a salesperson for a large healthcare organization. So, going into this I knew the ropes of business management… I traded in my heels for sparkly flip flops a long time ago, so I dusted off my business brain and threw myself into the creative process. The biggest challenges I’ve faced along the way pertain to glitter containment and deciding on which design to create next.
Have you heard the tagline, “She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes?” YEAH. That’s me. It’s EVERYWHERE. All the time!!! I say this only sorta tongue and cheek… I will go outside and find glitter on the driveway and wonder how it got there? I mean, most people have a love/hate relationship with glitter… they love it, or they hate it. Or. They love it, just not in their house… UNLESS it’s covered in epoxy. Me: I love to hate it! It’s more fun than I ever bargained for! I have hundreds of colors, shades, finishes…additives, glitter that glows in the dark, changes color with temperature, changes color with UV.
If you do a Google search on “glittered epoxy tumblers” the results are endless… The tools available to artisans these days are also endless. With the customers imagination and will to make magic happen, I can literally turn a boring old cup into a magnificent work of art.
We’ve been impressed with GlittercornFairy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I appreciate your support of my little shop more than you know! This experience has been so much fun and I am so grateful!
I specialize in crafting and creating gorgeous, glorious, personalized tumblers. I am passionate about spreading sparkly joy and making others happy. By creating something custom, unique, and one of a kind for each of my customers, I am able to make someone’s holiday, celebration, or even a bit more fun, memorable, and delightful. For me, It’s personal. Every tumbler I create, every smile that my creations bring, and every moment I spend making magic happen, I’m completely invested in the thought that this will brighten someone’s day. This might be the one smile they have today, and I’m going to make it count! And, If I can make one person happy, feel special, or be seen then I have achieved my goal. I’m motivated by making people happy and I go above and beyond to not just create a “cup.” I want to create something that speaks to the owner, the recipient, or the person admiring a piece of art.
More than anything, I want people to know that I am here to help make magic happen! I want to fulfil the unusual request or uncommon good… When I was younger, my name wasn’t popular… Well, “Margaret” was pretty popular with people born before 1950…but “Margie” – g like go – was never on anything personalized I never got to have my name on a cup, bow, trapper-keeper…nothing! SO. You want your name on a cup? Want your face on a cup? Want your favorite painting -that you painted- on a cup? Want to purchase the perfect baby giftset for Mommy & Me? Would you like your corporate logo on cups for your staff? I’m here for you. I’ve worked with Fortune 500 companies, some of the most amazing non-profits, and your next door neighbor… You don’t have to buy the same old, same old on Amazon. And by shopping local, your supporting one girls dream to make others smile!
I’m most proud of the fact that I am not the only one who gets a kick out of my tumblers… That it’s not “just me.” That others get as giddy about my tumblers as I do. My customers love being a part of the creative process. They love being able to order something that they can’t find in a store, something that is personalized and designed for its owner.
The only limitation to what I can create is our combined imagination… there are a few exceptions, but generally, as a rule, “If you can dream it, I can probably put it on a tumbler and make it fabulous!”
What matters most to you?
O. This is a good question. And I have far too many thoughts for this response… Living right. Being Kind. Bringing others joy. Making moments count. Being delighful because it makes all the difference, it fills my soul, and it comes back ten-fold. Being polite because it’s not hard to say please or thank you.
Time because at some point in life we all realize that time is finite. We only have this exact moment…to do something good for someone else, celebrate ourselves, or celebrate others. Loving one another because it’s profound what the gift of love can do for us if we allow it.
All of my creations are made with love…it’s the secret to my success.
Making sure that those I love, those near and dear, and those I haven’t yet had the opportunity to meet feel loved and appreciated. Gratitude because without it, there would be no Glittercorn Fairy.
AND MOST IMPORTANT to me is that when people think of me,
they smile because I’d hate to be the one that is forgotten.
