Meet Michelle Barrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Barrera.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After retiring from school district administration in 2018, I was in search of a creative outlet. I noticed that most of my posts on my personal Instagram page were food related, so with a few clicks Michelle Sips & Savors was born. I’ve always been known as the cook and entertainer of the family, so it was only natural to make a more concerted effort to document my recipes for my kids & friends. In addition to my food content on IG, I created a blog so I could share printable recipes. The one thing I knew nothing about was food photography.

With both my iPhone and my Nikon DSLR, I started experimenting with staging my meals and photographing them. From those dreary initial photos, I’ve developed an eye catching style. As a result, I’ve since been highlighted by Williams-Sonoma and Food & Wine. I’m now doing work for Austin’s own Afia, a Mediterranean food company that makes authentic falafel & kibbeh. It really is never too late to learn new skills!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I had no background in food photography. I’m self-taught and did so by researching the work of other food photographers and stylists. My biggest struggle was learning about lighting and editing. I shoot all of my photos in natural light and edit in Light Room & SnapSeed. I also found the proper background can make all the difference. For the first year, I used a discarded piece of white marble I found in a construction area. Now I have several backgrounds and a whole wall of cabinets & drawers dedicated to food props. My fav props are my mom’s antique silver cutlery and serving pieces. They really photograph beautifully.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a home chef, scratch baker and wine & spirits enthusiast that likes to style and take pictures of food & cocktails.. I share a wide array of recipes – decadent, healthiest, approachable, adventurous and always yummy! I’m thrilled that my recipes & vibrant style of photography has resonated with others.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is not to be afraid to try something new. My initial photos were dark and dreary. Check them out – they’re still on my feed. With over 750 photos & recipes you can see my progression. Being willing to take risks and acquire new skills has led to cooking segments on a local television show, opportunities to learn about wine, and being an ambassador for the food enthusiast classes at San Antonio’s Culinary Institute of America. And, although it was not the goal, I’m getting paid to do what I love – all because I tried something new!
