Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Posada.
Hi Nina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
SadBrujaClub originally started as Bruja+ (plus). I was tired of not finding cute bra and pantie sets for plus-size women that are more on the alternative side. Being a plus-size girl who has always been on the other side of the norm, I wanted to see that change. Unfortunately, my vision was too big for my pockets, but it’s not a vision I’ve let go of. I decided on SadBrujaClub after a terrible day; I remember venting to my best friend, Charlie, and saying, “forever a sad bruja,” and something in my head went off; I went home and started doodling on my iPad, and everything else just fell into place.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I can’t say I’ve run into anything that has blocked me in any way. I can say that I feel like my life has improved since that eureka moment. I love working with my hands and nothing makes me happier than seeing someone wear one of my t-shirts or use one of my cups. I get to express what I stand for and appreciate the love I receive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a year-round Halloween shop, and most of my designs revolve around horror, politics, and chicanx culture. I’m most proud of my last t-shirt design; by law, you can not wear candidate or political t-shirts to the polls, but people still wore this t-shirt, and I’m glad I was able to be part of their statement.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’m learning to fall in love with the city again. I moved here at the age of 13 and have seen it completely change, anytime I go to a part of town I rarely visit there’s something new or an old Austin spot is gone. I am reminded that there is still a community here when I’m vending at a market and that gives me hope.
