Meet Nisha Khanna of Functional Ayurveda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nisha Khanna.

Nisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was fascinated with knowing more about how my body worked, so I chose med school. But when it came time to choose a specialty, I didn’t feel passionate about any one field. If integrative medicine were an option 17 years ago, I would have chosen it.

My curiosity for learning more about how we work and what is truly healing, led me to dive deep into the study of Ayurveda. After 6 years of working as a doctor in clinics and hospitals, I became a full-time student again. Learning Ayurveda, felt like a homecoming, like a soul-knowing. The knowledge was so easy and intuitive for me to grasp. I didn’t need to study. I would hear it once and simply remember it like the truth. I finally felt true passion for my work and excitement about sharing it. During this time, I also learned a few Ayurvedic sub-modalities such as Marma (Vedic Accupressure), Ayuryoga, and Pranayama, which would later be incredible assets to my practice.

However, at the time, I had no idea how I was going to connect my MD with Ayurveda. There wasn’t a template for this. I trusted and next found Functional Medicine. It was amazing to connect the dots of modern science with ancient wisdom through the lens of Functional Medicine. I still get excited today with new research that affirms timeless truths.

My continued search for what works and truly heals led me to incorporate more subtle healing modalities into my toolkit –such as NLP, Channeled Light Healing, and Sound Healing — while I worked with the medical team to start Austin’s Whole Foods Medical and Wellness clinic.

It became apparent to me during this time, that I wanted to create my own version of how to deliver medicine. So after two years at Whole Foods, I left to create my private practice in its current iteration. Today, I guide Wellness Journeys for patients where we are not restricted by time, and I integrate all of the above healing modalities to affect my personal version of true healing.

I am also excited about education and sharing in a larger way with several online healing courses, on social media and YouTube, on podcasts, and I’m also writing a book!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The uncertainty — of not knowing if I was going to find passion in my career, and then how I was going to integrate what I love with the MD I had spent 7 years certifying in, and finally leaving the comfort of a paycheck to charter a path with my private practice that felt like truth and freedom.

The more I stay in alignment with my offering, having an impact, and giving from an open-heart, the more abundance flows and the fear of the unknown falls away. But it does creep back in, and it takes a renewed effort to realign with my values and heart.

My current fear is that I will not reach enough people and impart the wisdom I feel called to share. This is also requires realignment and focusing on the difference I make for people now.

As you know, we’re big fans of Functional Ayurveda. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Functional Ayurveda is an Integrative Medicine Practice to help you feel like yourself again — moreover, striving for better than you’ve ever felt before in your mind, body, and spirit.

The integration of Functional Medicine and Ayurveda is rare, and I only know of a few other doctors practicing it in the country, at the moment. Every doctor has unique gifts, and no two practice alike. Therefore, it is important to have synergy and rapport with medicine and doctor you choose. My practice is nourishing, and the people I choose to work with are excited, dedicated, and open-hearted. This is the recipe for transformation, and as such, most of my patients transform fairly quickly under my gentle guidance.

A patient favorite is the Marma experience. Simply calling it Vedic Acupressure feel to feels, because patients report such profound experiences with this therapy. Again, there aren’t many doctors offering Marma, and no two doctors are alike in their delivery.

My medical areas of expertise are optimal digestion, vitality, appearance, sleep, mood, and hormone balance.

Patients select from 3 Wellness Journeys which offer highly individualized care in the framework of 3 packages.
Prospective patients are able to schedule a complimentary 15-minute call with me to ensure we match and help determine which Wellness Journey is right for them.

What makes you happy?
Witnessing transformation in my clients and feeling their empowerment and renewed vitality for life.

Why? Because when we live our purpose we feel happy.

Nourishing, healthy, delicious, freshly-prepared food also makes me really happy, and I enjoy sharing with others how to create these types of meals.

Embodied self-expression also makes me really happy to both witness and enjoy myself.
