Today we’d like to introduce you to Rabia Rehman.
Rabia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From as far back as I can remember – I’ve always had the curiosity and passion for beauty, art, and fashion, which have been influencing factors in my life from a very early age. I remember as a child always playing with my mother’s makeup and applying it to myself and others. I started my makeup career professionally working for Estee Lauder as a Beauty Advisor & Skincare Consultant. That’s when I felt my interest and passion for makeup as a creative outlet and art form grew tremendously! While working for the brand, I realized I enjoyed helping people and becoming a freelance makeup artist and an esthetician was a great place to be in the beauty industry. I got myself into a Cosmetology School to become a licensed Esthetician and also took some makeup courses to further polish my skills. The Makeup artistry world is full of creative individuals and for me to start as a freelancer and then go on to create the brand – Makeup by Bia – was a big step! Every client and their skin is unique, giving me the opportunity to draw from my training and experience to guide them and make them feel great! I currently reside in Austin, TX where I am actively involved in growing my brand Make Up by Bia, which now caters to clientele from all across Texas. I also work with MAC Cosmetics and blog on Instagram @makeupbybia, sharing my reviews on makeup and skincare products.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After creating “Makeup by Bia,” I realized pretty quickly that growing your own brand is pretty hard work! While you enjoy the freedom of not reporting to any agency or company, you spend long days and evenings building a clientele as you are your own boss. While on a good day, you reap all the rewards, on bad days you have to face and bear difficulties along the way, including working long hours, weekends, and even holidays. My advice to anyone interested in a makeup career is to learn as much as you can before you venture out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Freelance Makeup Artist, a Licensed Esthetician and a Beauty Blogger from Austin, TX. I come from a very diverse background, and that is what sets me apart from others. I also like to work with people from all different colors, genders, and ethnicities and love to enhance and highlight the natural beauty of my subjects All of the editorial and fashion shoots I have done so far is something I’m quite proud of. Getting published in magazines and creating amazing collaborative art is just amazing. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing your images in a magazine… especially if that magazine is also in print!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Prior to starting my career as a makeup artist, I taught English as a second language for almost ten years.
