Meet Richie Phoenix of Cedar Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richie Phoenix.

Hi Richie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our mission is to create a diverse, ecologically functioning “Texas Food Forest”; an ecosystem that can support native flora and fauna, and produce enough food for our community. We want to conserve/contain/reuse as much water on the land as possible
Odd Duck Garden began in 2020. Since its beginning, Odd Duck Garden has focused on permaculture, sustainability and community. As homeowners, we knew we couldn’t do it all on our own so we began inviting people to join us in our vision. It began with Richie Phoenix, utilizing permaculture techniques to design water catchment systems and farm structures to facilitate gardening. Fran came along with her chickens, ducks, and some really cute rabbits to begin soil regeneration. They built a greenhouse together and Fran began sowing the seeds. We are in our 4th growing season and the garden has grown faster than anyone’s expectations.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to take a self guided tour through the garden to learn more about permaculture techniques.

Your walking tour is a one acre fully irrigated permaculture food forest. This garden includes 50 food producing guilds. There are approximately 50 fruit trees, of 12 types. You will see the following ponds: a feeder fish pond, a large fish pond and a duck compost tea starter pond. There are pollinator and bee garden beds, a compost tea irrigation system and egg producing chickens and ducks. You can hold a baby rabbit and see our rabbit coop where we raise rabbits for sale. The whole garden is created using berms and swales for water litigation.

We are now open to the public every Saturday in the Spring from 10 am – 3 pm. We are offering for sale fruit trees, perennials, and produce from the garden. We also sell seeds, loofah sponges and homemade compost tea/liquid fertilizer. We have a small garden shop selling local artisan pieces along with jewelry, painted rocks, fossils, cards, and more!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Master Craftsman & Teacher
Richie believes in a world for “our children’s, children” that is achievable when individuals take responsibility for a piece of the earth – no matter how big or small – and “build back” what nature knows best – circular sustainable ecosystems. Coming from a family of inventors, Richie has spent over 50,000 hours in 7 different trades, while continuously showing others what and how to use modern technologies to build back native ecosystems. He believes the seeds of cultural growth lie in sharing this knowledge. From linear helical water catchment design to solar steam power generation, Richie strives to plant knowledge to “build the bridges” of personal purpose and empowerment.
