Meet Samantha Abney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Abney. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Samantha is a life-long creative who utilizes florals and other natural elements to create visually interesting, texturally focused artworks. With a background in gardening and outdoor education, for Samantha floral design illuminates the art in nature and vice versa.

The work of Nice Stems is intended to highlight everyday beauty; to bring viewers and recipients to face the nature around them and the potential romanticism of creations as simple yet intricate as floral-based art. As a mental health advocate and student, Samantha values the juxtaposition of stimulation and relaxation that nature can bring.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Developing a floral hobby into a profitable business has provided some challenges – I never imagined myself as an entrepreneur or business owner, so jumping into that world was intimidating. Also, as simple as it seems, choosing a business name was one of the hardest decisions to make!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Nice Stems Design is a predominantly floral design-based creative business. We specialize in unique, intimate events and weddings, as well as custom gift orders. Much of our work is texture and color heavy and flower-forward. We try to work in a sustainable manner utilizing the locally grown products as often as possible, limiting single-use supplies (no floral foam), composting, up-cycling, and working with our community to learn and exchange resources. I am proud of the connection and service offered to each of my clients – kindness and accessibility are central values for Nice Stems, and I think we do a really good job of communicating, educating, and providing flexibility when needed.

Any big plans?
We are hoping to expand our work into the vibrant hospitality industry in Austin – many of our restaurants, hotels, bars, coffee shops, etc. are curated with such intention, and we want to connect and collaborate with more members of our community to amplify these spaces with florals and other natural elements. We also are looking forward to / manifesting opportunities to create more large-scale, semi-permanent works!
