Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Strong.
Hi Shannon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After law school, I started out as an environmental attorney for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. I worked there for many years while simultaneously volunteering my time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children (CASA). Upon leaving the environmental field, I decided to practice family law full time.
I went to work for a small boutique law firm in Dripping Springs where I got my feet wet in divorce, custody issues and other areas of family law. When I had my daughter, Marley, in 2013, I took a brief hiatus from law and got my real estate license so that I could have more flexibility to be with Marley, and have more control over my schedule. It is at that time that I also became familiar with market conditions and opened up my own side business, The Law Office of Shannon Strong, to assist clients with property tax appeals. That has continued to this day.
Now after working at several firms over the years, I have decided to venture out on my own one hundred percent and operate The Law Office of Shannon Strong as a family law and real estate firm. I started this as a Professional Limited Liability Company from the sole proprieteroship in 2023 . It has been doing amazing! I wish I had done it sooner. The opportunities have been endless with very little, to no marketing. I have been very blessed and am enjoying every minute of being a business owner, entrepreneur, mother and attorney who is completely in control of my professional and personal environment. I have one paralegal that I could not live without, I trust her with my life, and together, we tackle our challenges as friends and colleagues. Our business model is authenticity, availability and real concern for helping our clients get on the other side of a hard situation in not only a good position, but a BETTER position. We are older and experienced and we’ve both been there, done that! We care and it shows. Both of us truly care about our clients and their children. This is not just a job for us, it is a commitment to help people better their lives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It actually hasn’t been too challenging because I started my business later in life. Although I wish I had done it sooner, I think it all unfolded on life’s perfect timing. I spent the years needed and got the experience, as well as a bird’s eye view as to how things should be done before learning to operate on my own. I had fabulous mentors and role models that I was able to shadow and learn from. I also had the opportunity to learn from others’ mistakes as well as my own when it wasn’t my head on the chopping block!
If I were to have to list some struggles along the way, it would be the typical losses that come with the adversarial nature of my job and litigation. In family law, in particular, these are really difficult situations where many times everyone leaves upset on one issue or another. Not everyone can get everything they want when dividing up time with children and assets. I am a HUGE (did I say huge?) advocate for not going to court. As an attorney, I believe it is best, when at all possible, to retain control of your family’s destiny through mediaton, hiring a cooperative team of opposing attorneys, and keeping open lines communication, even when things get tough. Diplomacy in really trying times is what I have learned most in the struggles of my career and in my life. Even when it feels like the right time to fight, diplomacy should still prevail. Every time. I cannot emphasize that enough. My only exceptions would be if there is a danger to the children for one reason or another, or if all options have been thoroughly exhausted. It’s been said a million times and I am not sure who said it first, but you have to love your children more than you hate each other and emotionally regulate while repeating that to yourself!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think I answered this one in the question before! 🙂
I am cost effective, effiicient, I sincerly care about my client’s and their family dynamics and I want to see them functioning as a unit even after divorce. That doesn’t mean they have to be friends, just functional. It can be done and it doesn’t have to cost you all of your money!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am an inactive real estate agent, and also a real estate attorney. I also represent clients on their property tax appeals from April to usually September! It is a very successful business in addition to my family law practice.
I am the President of a rescue that has a very successful record of saving animals, predominantly wild horses, but also donkeys and a smidgeon of whatever animals come our way! We have almost a thirty year track record and are called Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue. The adoption center is located in Lancaster, California and the sanctuary is in Caliente, California. Lifesavers has approximately 400 horses at any given time! I am a huge animal advocate, in general. My daughter, Marley, and rescuing animals, is my “why” in life. Meaning why I work so hard day in and day out and where all my money goes, besides travel!
