Meet Shaun Nix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Nix.

Hi Shaun, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started in photography when I was about 12 years old. I started on a “Spy Tech” toy camera. The camera shot the 110 film cartridge. I was taking pictures of everything! One of them is my bookshelf. You see, I’ve always had a little OCD. So every time I would rearrange my bookshelf I would document what I had done. Pretty cool, right? Other than my love for organizing, I took photos of friends skateboarding, family events, and landscapes.

I didn’t get my first DSLR until my band, “Pour Habit” went on tour in 2008-2009. That was when I really started getting more serious about photography. I wanted to ensure I had a higher-end camera since I was traveling to Europe, Australia, and Canada. Documenting those moments was very important to me.

As my love for photography grew, I met an editorial/fashion photographer, Aldo Rossi, who took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. I was his assistant for a couple of years. There I learned how to work a set, talk to talent, orchestrate an excellent workflow, and observe what goes into a great shoot. If I can offer one bit of advice to someone starting out it would be to assist another photographer. You will learn a lot! Don’t ask a lot of questions, just observe and make sure to take out the trash.

During this time period of assisting, I was also working as a personal trainer. Health and fitness have been a growing part of my life as well. That is really how I got to be where I am today. That is photographing and training on the “I’m coming everywhere world tour” with Tom Segura.

We met at a little personal training facility in Woodland Hills, CA. We trained for a while before he invited me on the “Ball Hog” tour in 2019 to train him while on the road. He really didn’t know how much I loved to take photos. When I arrived in Canada he was super sick. We really didn’t get much training in. I asked if I could photograph the shows and he was gracious enough to allow me to do my thing. From there, the rest was history. Really it comes down to personality. When you are on the road and in close quarters with someone all the time, you want to make 100% sure you get along with that person.

Right now, we are finishing up the domestic touring of the “I’m coming everywhere world tour.” This has really been a dream come true and an experience like no other.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been a smooth road. When you have big dreams, you have big decisions. I’ve sacrificed a lot of time, money, and heartache to get to where I’m at today and I’m not finished. I believe your goals and dreams should be so big that they can be looked at as unattainable. I want to feel like I have to keep reaching for the stars even though I keep getting to the moon.

I’ve chosen my path and have made all the decisions that have put me in the place that I am today. I will say, be sure to cover all your basis when It comes to a shoot. Become so good that if an obstacle stands in your way you can calmly and confidently find a way around it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work currently involves photographing live comedy and portraits. I specialize in portraiture. I feel what sets me apart from others is the ability to really make people feel comfortable. I’ve always had a way of adapting to a client’s emotional energy and bringing them back to center.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Austin is incredible! I love the people. Everyone is so nice! Southern hospitality is a real thing! The food is absolutely amazing as well. I love going out and trying new places to eat and experiencing the different cuisine this city has to offer. A lot of hidden gems here.
