Meet Sophia Stout

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Stout.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
The coffee industry saved me! I’ve been in hospitality for 10 years now, and 6 of those have been in coffee. I love coffee. I love the people. I love the ritual. When I started working at Manana, I was 20 years old and new to the third-wave scene. I was brought up by veteran baristas who had fun but could easily pour a beautiful swan. I’m a control freak, so I was always concerned with systems and efficiency, so naturally, I became a manager quickly. I love working with a diverse group of talented, creative, and caring people. It’s energizing and communal. Coffee is low stakes, so we can stay cool and collected even through a busy Saturday morning.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have faced many hurdles along my journey. I worked through the covid-19 pandemic, and it was scary to feel like the world was ending and still serve coffee. But I locked in and made it work for my team and our guest’s safety, and we made it through. I opened up Mañana Dos while pregnant with my son, and fighting off morning sickness while on the phone with a contractor was no joke! Being a mother of a 4-month-old, it takes extra energy to just come to work. All go the obstacles have made everything more rewarding.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a coffee shop manager who specializes in people and elevated experiences. I carry the brand of Manana as part of my identity, having been a part of the shop for 6 years. I am proud of my perseverance through hardship (operating during covid) and cultivating a caring and knowledgeable team. I am sweet and assertive, which has aided in my leadership style. I know Austin, and I am a part of the Austin that people try to recreate, which sets me apart. I truly care about people and their experiences.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am a born and raised Austinite. My parents were a part of the artistic Austin 90s which shaped my childhood and turned me into the adult I am today. I have been setting the standards for Manana since 2018.
