Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Alvarez.
Hi Tatiana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Books – reading and writing – have always been a passion of mine. I didn’t have a big community to share that with until I joined Instagram, more specifically “bookstagram.” I felt like I found my niche and was introduced to many wonderful readers. It also opened my eyes to the indie book – authors who self-publish their own books. I really didn’t know so many amazing books existed until joining the community. It amazed me how many wonderful stories were out there but not getting the credit and love they deserve because they didn’t have the platform or marketing to do that. I was slowly growing my account and once I reached 10k followers, I knew I now had a platform to share such amazing books with the world and provide marketing to authors. A group of influential bookstagrammers and I got together and came up with the idea of the “Book Tour Gals, where we would provide a variety of services for authors, and they’d be able to pick and choose their services and the accounts they wanted to showcase their books. It started with a few authors we knew personally and through word of mouth our platforms began to grow.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. When we first started we didn’t have a set system or an easy way for authors to see our work in one place. We also had tons of miscommunication because we didn’t have any of the authors fill out a form/contract. We tried to remember everything from emails or private DM’s. We had a rather messy incident with an author that really made the seven of us sit down (on zoom because we all live in different states/countries) and flush out all the details. We made something good out of a bad situation and the real Book Tour Gals finally developed. But it took a lot of trial and error and conversations to get to a point where we feel confident in our business and ability to promote for authors.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Book Tour Gals is a company for authors to promote their books. We do cover reveals, promotional material and have even branched off into reels and Tiktoks. There are a few other well-known tour companies in our field, but we operate a little differently. In the other tour companies, authors will pay the owners and the owners of the company will look for bookstagrammers to promote your book. The author doesn’t have say and you aren’t guaranteed a high follow count with your host. The Book Tour Gals have set hosts – all seven owners – who have built platforms for this purpose. They will always work with the same people and know exactly the quality of our work. The authors have more say in these tours because they are working directly with us, the hosts. We are proud of the relationships we’ve made with so many different authors.
Any big plans?
We hope to build up our TikTok now because the market for authors is booming there. We also have two authors in our own group, myself included, and are super excited to show off books of our own.
