Today we’d like to introduce you to The Formality.
Hi The Formality, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Formality, as we are now, have really only been together since May of 2022. We initially came together before that, but with always changing members, there was nothing solid laid into the groundwork. As the line up solidified, we were ambitious to get out into the rich culture of the Austin live music scene. With our first taste of performing live, the adrenaline became addictive, so from that point forward, there has been no looking back. We are now pursuing more ambitious projects and venues to fill our gnawing drive, as well as working on studio songs we are putting out in the near future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All things considered, with our current lineup, it’s been smooth sailing. However, getting to this point took some time. The band started with a drummer (Benicio Arce) and a guitarist in late February of 2021. Our drummer later invited Kyan Blacklock to play bass. Kyan had never played bass but he learned whilst in the band. After a single practice together, our guitarist quit and was gone. We then invited our first guitarist(Richie George) to the band through Instagram. We couldn’t find a singer so we decided that Kyan would just take on the role. About 2 weeks before our first concert, we found our second guitarist (Jeremy Frey) and from there we have been doing consistent gigs and working on our own music. Building the band itself was honestly the hardest part of the journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Formality is an Indie and Alternative Rock band known for our snazzy onstage looks. Being the young kids off the blocks, we are still very green to Austin’s live music scene. However, with a strong head on our shoulders, we are moving fast. We are most proud of the fact that we have terrific band chemistry.
We are releasing a single on December 9th! It is called 104 (Blind Love).
What matters most to you? Why?
To us, what matters the most is creating music we enjoy and having fun. If you decide to make music you don’t enjoy, you are doing yourself a disservice and doing the music-making process wrong. There will always be people who don’t like your music, but in the end, you are your harshest critic. However, there are always people who enjoy your music as much as you do. We want to make music that we enjoy, and if other people enjoy it as well, that is a plus. While we dream of making music as our full time jobs and careers, like every musician does, we are happy to have the opportunity to create and share our music. We love performing live, songwriting, and playing our instruments. We hope others can enjoy our music as much as we do.
