Meet Tim Heller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Heller.

Hi Tim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up making funny noises and impersonating different actors to make people laugh. It’s always been something I did kind of casually with friends or at different gigs and people would say, “Hey, you should look into voice-over!” The thought seemed fun and romantic but I never thought it would end up being my full-time job. I was living in NYC at the time and took a five-week intro class with a casting director and after the first five minutes, I was hooked. My background is in Musical Theatre and Shakespeare and that is what I was actively pursuing, however, the back issues I’d been dealing with kept me from being able to work as I would like. What I thought was a major door closed only opened a thousand new ones and launched me into a career and community more fulfilling than I ever could have imagined!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. Having a background in acting is definitely helpful when getting started in VO, and I have been very lucky in some instances, but, like any other business, there was a big learning curve. Gone are the days of just showing up to a studio and reading a script. You now have to be able to put together your own home studio, be your own engineer, self-direct, and be your own business manager. There was a lot of baptism by fire, failing forward, and TONS of asking for help from those that are smarter and more experienced. I had to learn how to run a full-on business and figure out how to navigate the dry spells that inevitably happen to everyone and pivot when I felt stuck.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a voice actor! I work in podcasts, video games, animation, commercials, corporate narration, e-learning, you name it. I don’t think there’s anything I’d be known for widely but with the folks I work with, I’m known for my wide vocal range and helping other folks get started in VO.

I would say that I’m most proud of being able to support my wife and me do a job I built from the ground up and truly love. It is also a huge gift to be able to teach and give back as others have done for me.
