Today we’d like to introduce you to Waldo Harrison
Waldo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Axuro Lighting Co. is the fusion between my two distinct career paths: one as a visual artist at Axuro LTD, and the other as an electrical engineer. My journey began as a home automation technician where I first dabbled with LED lighting. At that time, our focus was on enhancing home aesthetics through scene lighting, particularly to highlight clients’ art collections. While these lights offered impressive effects, they lacked the capability to display animations or be interactive with their environment.
In my free time I started experimenting with microcomputers like Raspberry Pi and ESP32, teaching myself coding and hardware assembly. After a year of tinkering I unveiled my first LED art piece, “LED Man” — a 5-foot tall robot sculpture made from aluminum extrusion, dichroic panels, and dynamic LEDs. LED Man quickly became popular at underground raves and art shows, driving me to create a series of unique lamps using similar methods.
I recently launched my own business installing low-voltage electronics, where the core of my services is the installation and programming of dynamic lighting systems. This product showcases my passion for merging technology with artistic expression.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things have been going quite smoothly so far. Recently, I secured my first contract to install animated LEDs throughout an entire home. The client wants to use these lights while throwing big parties, and plans to sync them with DMX controllers for dynamic animations akin to those seen at concerts. Im also working on setting up some contracts with local clubs in Austin.
My main challenge at this stage is managing every aspect of the business on my own — from sales and engineering, to project management and installation. As the business grows, my goal is to bring onboard skilled individuals who can support and contribute to our continued success.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition to crafting LED art installations, my artistic focus at Axuro LTD revolves around exploring futurism through technology. I create abstract art pieces using visual frequencies, spectrums, and geometric patterns to convey a sense of mathematical beauty. The idea is to exhibit a distinctive style that transcends the medium used.
Currently, my main medium is digital art that is UV printed on aluminum panels. However, I also dabble with other digital forms such as projection mapping, animations, laser engraving, and 3D printing. Additionally, I occasionally immerse myself in traditional art like painting, fashion, and murals.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I would say the most important lesson I’ve learned as a creative is the value of humility. Over my 10-year career as an artist, my style and techniques have evolved significantly. Throughout this journey, I’ve prioritized staying connected with my community and continuously refining my skills and creative processes. I believe a critical pitfall for any artist is complacency — thinking you’ve mastered your craft instead of pushing the envelope and striving for new heights. Looking back at my earlier works, I’m struck by how far I’ve progressed, which motivates me to keep evolving in the future.
