Rising Stars: Meet Amy And Melissa Segal of Zilker neighborhood, Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy And Melissa Segal

Hi Amy and Melissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We are so excited to share our story with you and we thought it would be fitting to start with how we actually got to this point in our lives to create a small business together. The short answer is having a strong partnership, knowing how to execute and having confidence in knowing who we are. This along with having a relevant idea (to us) and having the conversation was a sure way to get us on our path to start a business.

So what was the relevant idea to us? We have always loved fashion but have had our own struggles with it as well. As petite women, we had challenges with finding the styles we loved to fit our petite stature. As we continued to shop at boutiques, we turned our frustrations into inspiration. Creating our own independent clothing label for petite women was a relevant idea to us. It was personal. The first year was living out a creative dream and it very quickly turned into a business opportunity to help other petite women. Not only do we care about fit, we care about quality, thoughtfulness, comfort and style and have really enjoyed building out our petite community of very loyal customers across the US over the last five years.

Together Segal was founded in Austin in 2019 by twin sisters, Amy and Melissa Segal, and is an independent clothing label for petite women who live consciously and choose thoughtfully.

We have a simple mission in mind: to create intentional and elevated designs for our fellow petites, offering timeless, minimal and versatile wardrobe essentials that are made to last. Our collection is designed with a petite frame in mind and features styles that elongate and flatter petite proportions while also elevating everyday wear.

As petite women ourselves, we felt there was a gap in the market for sustainable and timeless wardrobe essentials for women 5’4 and under who shop consciously and choose to support brands with similar values.

Our collection is about simplifying with less and finding joy in every piece you wear, helping conscious consumers embrace their individual style one piece at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Owning your own business can be extremely rewarding but definitely not without some challenges along the way.

Because our volumes are low, as entrepreneurs in the small but complex business, we had a lot of learning to do and we were constantly wrestling with how much time was required as we design the product ourselves. We manage the development and production timeline/process with our partners, we do all the fabric sourcing ourselves, the quality checking, and the managing of our website. In fact, we two founders ship the products ourselves, making sure every product leaves our hands and arrives at our customers door having been treated with love the whole way.

When starting your own business, especially with a partner, it’s important to set expectations of your roles and how much time will be needed to do all the necessary jobs required to to get your business started and meet your goals for a successful business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We believe our combined professional and personal experiences over the last three decades helped us with starting and running a business. Each decade brought new experiences that have helped define who we are today as individuals and has given us the opportunity to think about what we truly value and want going forward. Our business backgrounds, corporate jobs in Accounting/Finance and Marketing/Sales, in several different industries, allowed us to easily divide up our own responsibilities based on our specific skillsets and expertise from our former jobs which made things a lot easier for us when creating our own business.

How do you think about luck?
We recognize our good fortune, our parents instilled a good work ethic and supported us in our endeavors, that anything is possible if we make a commitment to work hard and reach our goals.

We also serendipitously met our first pattern maker at the gym, after working out with her for years. It takes starting the conversation (out loud!) to get the ball rolling and that truly got us started sooner than we ever thought possible.
