Rising Stars: Meet Andrea Young of Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Young.

Hi Andrea, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been singing since I could. My parents noticed at about age 4 how easily I’d catch on to songs in movies, commercials, and radio jingles. I annoyed everyone by singing all the time. Haha Started voice lessons at age 8 and began learning piano about a year later. Picked up the guitar at 15 and have been pretty much non stop ever since. Spent several years trying to “find myself” in college, but after falling into a music teaching job in 2014, I left school and began teaching and playing music full time. I never needed to “find myself”. I’d known music was my answer since I was a kid. Now, I’m still living my passion in the Live music Capitol of the world! I have amazing, talented students, and am continuing to build my solo career as well as my Rock n’ roll band that I Co-front with my partner, Jeff Dolman.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, the biggest bumps I’ve hit have all been when I doubted my music as a long term career. I made the mistake of letting other people convince me you can’t do Music full time, and stupidly didn’t pursue it in college. So there were a few years there that I had a bit of an identity crisis. Haha But it just made rediscovering my music that much more exciting and validating. I also suffered a hand injury while driving back from a gig last year that was pretty rough. A Deer ran out right infront of me, totaled my car and the air bag deployed and managed to snag my right hand causing ligament tears in my thumb. I wasn’t able to play guitar for over 6 months. But I adapted and started playing more shows as a two piece with my partner Jeff. I switched to keyboard with one and a half hands, and Jeff played lead guitar. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me get more comfortable with keyboard live.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional musician, Singer/songwriter and music instructor. I teach guitar, piano, Ukulele and voice, but what I specialize in the most, and am most known for, is Voice. I also help my students with song writing.
I am most proud of my original music and music I’ve created with the different amazing musicians I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with over the years.
If you ask people who know me, they’d probably say what sets me apart is the fact that I play guitar backwards, I’m a lefty.
But, I think what sets me apart is my nice rack. 😜 Haha, just kidding! I actually mean my perspective and my voice through my writing and performing.

What does success mean to you?
I don’t try to measure moments in successes and failures. That’s way too serious of an approach for me. I prefer to measure in happiness and fulfilment. I try to keep doing what makes me feel alive and keeps my heart and soul full!
