Rising Stars: Meet Anne Mistak of Tarrytown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Mistak

Hi Anne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an interior designer by way of NYC where I went to design school, worked for other great firms to understand the nitty gritty of it all and moved to Austin in 2018. Pre design I was actually a professional musical theatre actress with an emphasis on dance and improvisation. Raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas with lots of down home/small town memories; I never forgot where I came from. Animal lover first, especially my little terror-ier Beatrice Louise who I adopted when I arrived in Texas, she is my ride or die.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh of course not ! Interior Design is not for the faint of heart with all the personalities and the weight of client expectations and often lots of money on the line. An old boss of mine would remind us though, ‘This isn’t the front lines of a war, its just decorating, guys.’ You have to roll with the punches and keep evolving and remember to thank everyone always. It’s a leave your ego at the door kind of mentality to set yourself up for success. But all that being said it is a colorful, exciting, always surprising career if you can weather the storm. Humor gets me through it must days.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an interior designer who started a staging business for Austin real estate with my partner, Meghan Hughes. We specialize in creating warm, inviting and artful homes so potential buyers can truly see themselves in these spaces. I love to push the envelope, (when I can) and include something a little funky, a little weird as I find that really strikes the balance of real life living with a peppering of whimsy. Beige on Beige/Cali Style is definitely not what I’m known for if that gives any color to my personal style. I am most proud of completing my degree as a second career later in life, committing to the learning and educational side of design even though many of my fellow classmates were about 10 years my junior at the time. They kept me young ! My life experience in both having seen much of the world (still need to check Tokyo/India off my list!) and general spidey sense type of intuition sets me apart.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I was a guest on the then live television series of Martha Stewart’s in NYC 2008. I taught the audience (and Martha) how to make brooches out of zippers and hot glue ! It was broadcast nationwide and there are clips of that show in her recent documentary on Netflix. She is a boss, a true artist and a pioneer for women in business.
