Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Tang.
Hi Casey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In college, I was pursuing Pharmacy as a career and never considered doing something creative. I was an officer in my pharmacy organization, and they needed someone to take photos and I just so happened to have a camera! What started out as a way to give back to my organization became a creative outlet for me.
Slowly, students on campus started asking me to take their graduation photos, and I first did them for free. I didn’t even know how to edit photos so I would send the pictures to my phone, edit them on VSCO, and upload it back onto my computer. I wanted to learn how to become a better photographer so I watched countless YouTube videos and taught myself some new skills.
Now, I transitioned to working full-time as a UX Designer and am enjoying photography as a freelance profession and hobby. I love the flexibility to be able to take on projects and work that I am truly passionate about and collaborate with other creatives!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve always struggled with imposter syndrome as I am a perfectionist and was not taught photography traditionally. It was also difficult to balance my coursework in school and now, full-time job, with photography. Sometimes, it’s easy to get burnt out creatively when so many things are going on!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer (who also paints and designs). I am obsessed with colors and dreamy scenes, which I try to exude in my personal style. I love working with others and bringing out their individual personality in the photos and collaborating on ideas.
My favorite shoots are usually passion projects that I get to bring to life – I love the process of creative direction and putting together outfits for editorial shoots. One of my favorite shoots to date was a pool shoot that I worked on with some of my friends, who helped model and style the shoot. The shoot was heavily influenced by Wes Anderson, one of my favorite directors, and focused on fun compositions.
