Rising Stars: Meet Southern Angels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cullen and Caroline Parker.

Hi Cullen and Caroline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The two of us grew up together playing music. Both of us picked up as many different instruments as we could as children, including guitar, piano, drums, bass, and saxophone two of. We started writing songs together about ten years ago, and it’s always been our dream to have a band together. Our dream finally came true last year ironically when COVID started. It forced Cullen to come home from college at Texas A&M early, and we were able to start writing songs together full time again. By the middle of 2020, we had put together a full band, pieced together with musicians we knew from parts of our lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Actually, it has been a surprisingly smooth road compared to what we expected. We are very lucky in that we have a great support system through our family and friends. Everyone believes in what we are doing, and we are fortunate to have quickly developed into a full-time band.

Here are some pieces of advice to other musicians who want to do this full time: Be kind to everyone. You never know what connections you have that might come in handy. Do everything you can to stay organized. Things can get hectic very quickly, and it’s important to have an organizational system. Stay focused. It’s going to take a strong work ethic to get to where you want to be. Pay attention to what people who are a few steps ahead of you are doing. Try to model yourselves after them. Do what they are doing to be successful. Play music that you care about. If you genuinely want to work hard at your craft, then you will be rewarded with success down the line.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
First and foremost, we are musicians and performers, but we always say that we specialize in making people happy. Our biggest goal is to make people feel something from listening to our music or by seeing us live in person at a concert.

We are most proud of how we represent ourselves. We are prepared in everything that we do, and everything is very thought out. We don’t cut corners. We strive to be the most professional versions of ourselves at any moment. What sets us apart from others is that we are a family act. There aren’t too many bands that are fronted by a brother and sister, so we are quite literally a family affair. We emphasize this with Southern Angels, and we treat our fans like family.

How do you define success?
We define success as creating a sustainable life that brings us joy while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. For us, if we can wake up every day and be excited about what we get to do, then we are successful.

A very strong message in your mission statement. The following says it all. “For us, if we can wake up every day and be excited about what we get to do, then we are successful.”
